My Real Life Double Crossover

In my introduction I may have mentioned that I'm a project manager for an infill real estate developer here in Downtown Sacramento.  Currently there are two major infill projects going on Downtown.  One is the Sacramento Railyards -the former UP yards.  I work for the owner of the other large, adjacent project, Township 9. It is the site of the Bercut-Richards Cannery.  We are converting it into 2,350 housing units, 900,000sq ft State of CA office buildings, and 150,000 sq ft of urban retail.  It is also a very historic site -it was even a signal depot and Nazi POW camp during WWII. Much of the redeveloped property will preserve that history and serve to educate the public of the importance of the Sacramento & American Rivers and railroads in the development of California and the Western United States.

Township 9 exemplifies "smart growth."  The material from every building from the former cannery site was repurposed and will be used in the new development. It is one of the first major LEED neighborhoods of this scale in the Country.  And, the reason that it is Railroad related, we also have a built a Light Rail Station on the property. It is amazing how many meetings were involved in just constructing the double crossover alone. Our rail contractor was Stacey Whitbeck Co. for Sacramento Regional Transit. Our company wanted to have the nicest transit station in town -our company shelled out $3.5mm for that.

I've been on the project for three years since I graduated college.  It's been a great working experience -and almost like building a real life model railroad

This is the first leg of the Green Line. Right now it only runs from Richards and North 7th (where Township 9 is) and ties into the Blue and Yellow lines at 8th and K Streets. Eventually the tracks will cross the American River, head through Natomas and end at the Sacramento International Airport.
