WS Tunnel portal C1152

Are the Woodland Scenic Tunnel Portals, tall enough to handle modern tall equipment.  I tried the height out with my autorack cars, pretty much the tallest items I currently have, but will the tunnel handle a crane car, usually one of the tallest items?

test resulted in having to raise the foundation on which the Portal rests on my layout for some cars.This was do to the Roadbed,so I would test whatever you are planning to do.

I had to raise mine because of the curved top to accomodate auto racks and stacks.  Forget how much exactly, but I just put some styrene shims at the bottom of the portal entrance to raise it up, no more than 1/8" from memory.

Or notch it, which is what railroads often do!

I think there is a notched tunnel on the market - PeeWee products or something?

Notched arches, very practical.  Seeing as how this RR of mine is still in the early stages of building, I think there is a budget and space for "larger" arches.......

By the way, what is the highest piece of equipment in N scale (in inches).

I had the same question back when I was building my Kankakee Station overpass, and here's the answer I was given:

Possibly with the Walthers well car. Those stand tall if highcube containers are used.

I checked the stock Walthers 5-unit Thrall well car set with 2 Deluxe hi-cube containers and the set tops out at 1^20.2/₃₂" (21.75 scale ft) above the railhead.  For comparison, a more prototypical stack set (the Kato Maxi-IV with Kato containers) tops out at 1^17.8/₃₂" (20.75 scft - still higher than Plate F+).

Right; that should give you at least a tenth of an inch of breathing space. Just don't get too carried away with multiple layers of paint.

Paint?  I thought you let them naturally age.     Seriously, it looks like I'll have to put the tunnels on some kind of support; I don't like the notched look.
