I went metric about ten years ago, when I started to get serious about building ships. I wish I had gone metric much earlier, as the advantages are everything. Even converting .001" to mm becomes second hand after a while: 0.020" styrene is 0.508 mm.

I grew up with metric system, but after immigrating to US 32 years ago, I have embraced the Imperial system. At this point I'm comfortable with both and like DKS said, tools such as digital calipers do the conversion for you at a touch of a button.  Same for drafting software (even Corel Draw) can be easily switched between many different units.

Not to digress, but has there been a response from Shapeways, re the OP's question?

In the past, when I first started getting parts rendered from Shapeways, I submitted some STLs in inches and never had a problem.  So most likely the problem was in the upload of the STL.

In having to deal with many overseas contractors, I quickly switched over to Metric.  The fact that the increments are more fine (.001" = .0254mm, and 1mm = .0394") allows for much more intricate detail when four decimal places are factored in.

Went back and forth with Shapeways a bunch, and indeed problem was my uploads, but it is not resolved on my end in my software as I had all my settings right(I sent them a screen shot) so somewhere in  other maybe, global settings I have something wrong. I use Autodesk Inventor and have not had the time to figure it out yet.  Must be some global setting somewhere.  That's next on my list to fix, then another round of parts.
