Prototype auto glass has been slightly tinted for decades. Does anyone know an easy way to replicate that? I remember, as a kid, of lightly misting the glass of 1/25 models with a metalic spray paint. Worked fairly well. I doubt it would work on 1/160 windows, though.

A thin layer of diluted transparent paint, such as Tamiya clear acrylic paint, might do the trick. Would likely have to mix colors to get just the right hue.

My order arrived today, and the clear and formerly colorless plastic window insert is heavily tinted.  As I recall, tinting this dark did not come out until the 1980s.

Around 1992 Idaho passed a law banning dark window tinting.  Those of us that already had cars with the dark tinted windows had to have them inspected by the state police in order to "grandfather" around the law.

So it is as I feared it would be. That's too bad.  Tinting the windshield was and is always illegal. If they are that dark then they probably look as if the windows were painted-on (not see through).

I emailed an order to Wig-Wag LLC when they were first announced.  However, when I was beginning to have doubts if Walthers was ever going to get them, I also placed an order with DM Toys in Germany.

This allowed me to get the Lemke MiNis VW T2 camper in the Flower Power paint scheme, as well as some other models not readily available this side of the Atlantic.

I wish DM Toys carried the MZZ line. Lots of interesting stuff there and they have been upgrading their tooling recently.

I put an old clear colorless plastic window insert in one of the Mercedes in order to provide a comparison to the tinted plastic window insert.



While the tinted insert does allow some light to be transmitted, it definitely is too dark for the 1960s through 1970s.

Thanks Carter. One wonders why in the word would they go with dark-tinted window inserts. especially after all these years of using clear ones.  Change for the sake of change (like it is being done with so many other items nowadays)?
