Around town, I'd have to say they're in "captive service." Before the new operator took over, NS didn't really shuffle them off the line except to take them to the Valley for some other kaolin mines. Now, I'd guess they've all been leased by the company or something.
My town used to have the Southern's line to Charleston (the orginal rail line in SC) but now the tracks dead-end in Oakwood, SC, with a branch off to "north aiken." If you'd like to explore the line:
