I seem to recall reading that Chessie yellow on new EMD locomotives  in the late 70's was just a Pantone hue or two away from the Federal Yellow that DuPont was supplying to the bus body companies (Bluebird, Thomas, et al). If you have a **clean** Chessie loco or covered hopper, try to ballpark your paint to that.  Can't remember the exact source, probably in the Chessie locomotives book, or possibly on the hosam website.

One other thing about yellow, I find that it's the most transparent color, difficult to get good coverage when airbrushing.  I've screwed up a few paint jobs before I learned to first lay a good base coat of white down before the yellow.

I'm wondering if a different color base coat could make one of these other yellows approximate SBY, if nothing else could be found. Reefer orange base with a yellow over it?  Sounds like too much work, though.

Pro auto painters use this trick all the time. I'm not a painter myself, but, I'm sure there is info somewhere about automobile painting that would explain how to use different base colors.......Mike
