Don't know if this was posted or not, but Model Train Stuff is blowing out the Atlas Trash Flats at $9 each. Thats insane cheap. Of course you need to find a source of the containers.

Anyone know how different these would be from a flat for hauling 40' containers?

Might get a few to paint up as some fictional lease/RR and use these to haul containers, or maybe 40' trash containers as those used in the PNW

I know that, but I meant from Trailer Train/TTX flats or other flats used for shipping 40ft box containers

The TT cars all had decks.  You might be able to add a deck, but TT largely quit using 85 ft cars in the 60s, with many of them rebuilt to 89 feet.

On the other hand, your idea of lettering them for a fictional road should work fine, and there's no reason you'd have to add a deck.  As far as the railroad is concerned, a container is a container, whether it's full of trash or TVs.  You might have to move or replace the container mounts to haul 40 ft boxes, but that shouldn't be hard to do.  It's your railroad, go for it!

Blowin' 'em out, huh? I wondered about the market for these flats when Atlas announced them. Very narrow in application, region and era, and too little foobie potential. Sorry to see them not do well, actually.  :|

How about some VTTX cars?? Those were 85 footers with open frames and container spots on them. They also came in 60 foot flavors as well. I'd have to dig, but I remember shooting one on the UP a few years back. They were strictly COFC cars.

I think there's another run of these inbound.    So I'm sure they're trying to clear these out before they get the next shipment.  But since that's a lot of the same roads, and the market's already saturated, this definitely doesn't bode well for sales of the next round.  This is definitely one of those things that's not only a small market to begin with, but isn't really 'cool' enough that people would want to run these as foobies either.  Very niche.

There were some 80 ft + log flats in the Northwest years ago, built from heavyweight baggage car frames.  These could be used for a modern version of that, if someone has long logs or poles to haul.

Since I just jumped on these, who sells containers that are appropriate for them? Thanks,

Phil

Besides the Atlas ones, there are the sludge containers from Fine NScale http://www.finenscale.com/intermodal.html

One of the MRRr mags had an article on turning regular containers into trash boxes.  It might have been RCM making them in HO but could be done in N. I'll look for the mag after work.

Just popped for two of these, and the last set of 4 containers in stock.  I thought the sludgetainer article os an N Scale or N Scale Railroading one from 4 or 5 years back, but I am probably wrong.  Can someone check Trainlife on this one?
