I've been working on building a new HO layout based on the Philadelphia Belt Line in the 1960s. As part of the layout I had planned on a swing-up section to model a pier extending out in to the Delaware River. Now that I'm working my way through construction, I need to actually figure out how to build this. I had planned on building the swing-up section as 16"x16" with a single track down the centerline to hold 3 cars at most.
Does anyone have experience with building a swing-up section? I've heard piano hinges with carriage bolts - would this work? Is 16"x16" too much? Should I scale it back? Any other ideas?
