Hollow-Core Door Layouts

Hello everyone,

On Saturday, 1/14/11, I am putting on a clinic for the Carolina Southern Division's "Railroad Modeling University" about the advantages of N Scale.  My clinic is nearly complete, but I would like to share some photos of hollow-core door layouts to emphasize what can be done in a small space in N.

I would like to be able to show a well-detailed close-up scene followed by a wider shot of the entire layout to maximize the effect.

If anyone has any photos that they wouldn't mind sharing for clinic purposes, please post them below with your name and approval to use your work.  I get nothing out of the this clinic other than the satisfaction of sharing our great scale with people who are either entering model railroading or interested in N Scale.  I will give you credit for the photos.

By the way, I am also plugging the RW forum as a great place to learn about N Scale.

Marcus: I will pitch in - An HCD layout designed by a Trainboard member and
created by David K. Smith. The blog has a lot on it for a year with
at least quarterly up-dates on the construction. It's an LDE based
HCD. Secondly, it's on the Layout Engineering Report on this
forum. San Diego and Arizona Eastern HCD SP 9/86 El Centro
Branch. There some early construction shots and overall shots.

I got my inspiration for the HCD which is perfect for my space and time, as well
as economic constraints, from Railwire. Ed K with the kidney, V-Man's PENN in
N, Foxxey takes the Carolina Central to a new level and DKS for the coolest
HCD plans. I can't recommend an HCD project, specifically a theme or LDE enough.
That controls size and what actually goes where. Oh and The 2011 Doorman award

Thanks for the props, David.  Unfortunately, all I have are shots that have been posted here many times before.  Everyone is probably tired of seeing them, but, hopefully, they will be of use.  I'm really jonesing to start my next layout based on the RF&P, but I have to sell a townhome, buy the next house, and move first.

Anyhow, this is from my old HCD layout that I called the Virginia Central, because (1) the layout was loosely based on the design of the MR project layout, the Carolina Central, and (2) I was modeling the C&O in central Virginia along the Piedmont Subdivision, which was originally (and conveniently!) called the Virginia Central.

Here's a wider shot that shows the 36" x 80" original HCD section with a 12" x 80" HCD extension to add a staging yard.

If you check out the last couple of issues of N Scale Magazine, I wrote a column in one of them, (sorry, can't remember which one) regarding the many moods of the Hollow Core Door...  In addition to using it as a full layout base, they also make handy extensions for adding a staging yard, or can be used as a domino system for a larger layout (which Ed can also illustrate), and my favorite, the quick and dirty scene divider!

What Lee didn't tell you is that he also used a 12" HCD that I gave him a couple of years ago for Elkins, WV on his WM layout.  I still think it's cool that the Elkins HCD is one-half of a 24" bifold HCD kit; the other half is the shelf for the yard on the Virginia Central (pictured above), which is now in the hands of Brian (RockGp40), who took that layout off my hands before my move in 2010.  It makes me happy to know that those two hollow core doors now reside at good homes only about thirty miles apart on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Feel free to use it along with credit, and you're good to go.  There are a few other albums with train stuff too, along with a lot of personal stuff.  Obviously, the train stuff is g2g, but the family stuff, not so much.

Thanks to all of you for the input and help. 

I am doing a clinic on operations in any scale, something I did last year as well.  Later I was asked to put together the N scale clinic when another presenter wasn't able to do it.

Of note is that the Carolina Southern Division had clinics scheduled for each scale.  Only the N scale one survived, with an pre-reserved audience of 4 people.  I may get more walk-in's, but if not this will be a very casual one-on-one type clinic.

For the operations clinic, which I had more time to prepare for, I have 22 signed up.
