OK you guys in the DC Metro area...

I passed by the Robinson Terminal building and saw a car I didn't quite recognize.  When I passed headed out I only caught a glipse and thought it might be an atriculated auto-rack, figuring they were dropping diesel cabs.  When I went by today it is definately not.  Probably 60-70', 80' at the outside, angled roofline similar to a SkyBox, and yellow with white excess height markings.

I've seen a few CP boxes there but this one was close into the wall so I didn't get a good look to get more info.

What was it?

It could be a TTX Unilevel carrier. It is for trucks and other large vehicles. I can't figure out how to post the TTX ad. Bob.

It is around 80' long, single deck, made for cab and chassis or tractors, RV's, buses, etc. Has tri-fold 10' wide doors, wheel tie-downs, really looks like it would work well. I retired from Hino Trucks a little over 2 years ago and we were looking at them for transport from our Williamstown, WVA assembly plant. We had shipped some on bi-levels from LA in early 2006 with the upper deck pulled up but did not continue.  At that time the number of cars available was slim. Bob.

I drove by there today also but didn't see it.  Robinson terminal would make a great scene on a layout.

Thanks guys.  NS had a page on them.  The PDF info sheet has a builders diagram and good pictures.  Looks like taking an Atlas articulated could result in two if done right, just add dors to the articulaed end and add the second truck to the underside, initial simplified look anyway
Update-OK now that I've actually LOOKED at my Atlas car it'll probablt  be easier to scratch it then bash it.  Smoothsides, different roof, less "grills".

Bob- I went by Fri evening then returned Sun afternoon.  They probably picked it up not long after I went back.  It was on the track closest to the freeway against the wall.

Since I am in Jacksonville, FL and have not seen the car at all much less close up it was a guess. I had thought of using the Atlas car also but there are too many things that would not work. The real car has some real potential for TTX, not every owner wants their truck driven cross country, most of my KW customers in the 70's would not accept their truck used as a drive unit. Bob.

Sorry, but I didn't see it.

However, I did see something Saturday morning that I never saw before, a 60 oversize box car spotted on the lead track to the Alexandria Power Plant. It was about 20 yards from the mainline and by itself. It must have been a bad ordered car, as it was blocking the branch to the power plant and Robinson Terminal at the waterfront.

Wait now, Robinson Terminal is right off the beltway not near the waterfront.  I also drove by Robinson yesterday and didn't see the car.  My wife was with me and asked me why I slowed down on the beltway going past there.

The car was in the yard near the tank car transloading station, across the tracks from Vulcan, on Friday evening (saw it from the VRE)
Modeling (or attempting to model) the Central Vermont circa October 1954  . . .

Robinson Terminal has locations at Springfield and the waterfront (for now - the waterfront location's days are numbered). The history of the operation is documented in my track plan book, along with layout designs based on the Springfield operation, including the Robinson-Washinton Post Plant in the N scale version.

Learn something new everyday.  When I think of Robinson, I think of the facility on the old Southern along the beltway.
