Figureing building size?

Was planning on using a couple buildings like this on the new layout and need help figuring out the size.

The building was the Sharon Steel Hoop mill, then it was sold to Jones & laughlin steel.


This is the end I'm trying to figure out:


I got some number, but it looks small to me so what do you guys think is the width of this building?

My first try was way too small as well.  I went back and tried to follow the track better and got ~100' for the building and ~ 18' for the width of the door.

OK, well I was probably way off.

FWIW, Using google maps, I get a measurement of around 73' across the lower eaves.

I don't know if any of this means anything, but it gives another look at it.

Dang I printed it out at 100' wide and it perfectly matched my full size sketch on cardboard that I guesstimated. My first try at converting the photo, I got 60' wide. Looked way small when printed that size.

Since I'm not modeling the exact area I may just go with 100'. I just want a big industrial look.

Using the track gauge at the door, I make it out as about 75 feet.

I did the same as David and came out as 75'.  As a sidenote.  The PC book I got for Christmas has a photo of the same location except it has a PC train crossing the B&O tracks.

I think I'll stick with 100' and scale the door down a hair.

Bob the crossing in the foreground was the NYC/P&LE so it would be PC at one time.

I'd say 75'-80' with the door at about 14' wide and 3'-4' remaining to the right of the door.

I ended up going with 85' wide for my models. 2 building staggered, also hiding a staging yard.


Back building is 24" long, other is 16".

Those mock-ups look well proportioned to my eye, regardless of how well they match the size of the prototype.  I like it.  Oh, love the FTs, too!  Keep up the nice work and great progress!

Hmmm.  $54.98 for uncle Walther, or about $12 worth of Evergreen... can you choose wisely?

At least the Walthers kit does include the rolling stand for the interior.

In this case though, there's a single entrance, no other wall openings, and I'm not familiar with the prototype, whether it's supposed to be a rolling mill or some other type of finishing mill. It all means the interior detail of the rolling mill isn't needed, and scratchbuilding will get you something a bit more customized and inexpensive.
