Unless the hardboard version is less expensive or significantly lighter (I doubt it), I don't see any advantage of it over the lauan door.  I've used the lauan door blank (no boring and not prehung) on two layouts now with no obvious disadvantages.

Look up your local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, and see if they have a ReStore...  I have about a dozen hollow core doors in stock that I've got priced under $10.  Not many 36" ones, but they come in all the time.

Has anyone ever built a storage compartment, drawers, shelfs and
maybe a small work area below the door? So it looks like a center
counter in a kitchen with storage underneath?

It would look like this, but plywood construction, 55" high, some
shelfs, some drawers.
