Anything to see or do on the quick in Carbondale? I am going up next week for an Amtrak conductor test and may have some time to kill.

Have you considered NS? Good money BTW. They hire conductors (and other positions) pretty regularly around here.

I'd consider NS I suppose. I'll look into it after Carbondale. Check your PM box for more.

You'll have to join the CRHS so you can practice as a car host, controlling unruly mobs on the next excursion.  Officer MacMillan came packing heat...

Chuck's Depot is in Marion, east of Cabondale. Pretty good N selection last time I was there. Funny, I was just in Marion today but couldn't make it by the shop :-\

The specific Amtrak gig I am aiming for's in Milwaukee actually, a Conrail-free zone. (Knock on wood)

Best Bloody Mary I have ever had was in a bar just south  (a few feet) of the old IC depot and down in a basement tavern--my son the perpetual SIU student took us there.  Probably best that you wait until after the Amtrak exam. ;D

Quattro's for pizza.

Giant City Lodge just south of C-dale in the Shawnee National Forest has good food.

17th Street BBQ (run by national BBQ champ Mike Mills who is featured on Food Network frequently)  is in both Marion (east of C-dale) and Murphysboro (west of C-dale).  Absolutely worth a visit.

OK so I've been going to Carbondale for seven years and all I mention is food.  Haven't seen a hobby shop and have only seen a few Amtrak trains.
Best regards,

Roger

Much appreciated Phil. I'll definitely have to figure out some sort of reason to see you guys before I go, but I'm not going to count my chickens. I'm concerned how my having epilepsy will effect the physical requirements, but not chirping up about it yet. Mine's under control now and I live a normal life but even a diagnosis can get you disqualified for some things, live driver's licenses in some states.

Otherwise, I appreciate the Green Bay connection. Most of my Dad's side of the family lives in the immediate Milwaukee area, West Bend predominantly. I have two cousins already looking for an apartment for me, even before I've secured the job.

And Roger, thanks for the BBQ tip.

I have to agree with Roger on the 17th Street BBQ.  Illinois basketball coach Bruce Weber fell in love with the place when he was coach at SIU and he still goes back when he's close.

As far as trains- the IC through town can be quite light.  If you get one heading south you might want to check out Makanda- nice curves on the grade down from Carbondale.  There used to be some establishments north of town that featured jello wrestling........ ;D
