IFRX 3-bay Covered Hopper

Hi gang, I just recently finished up weathering this one. It's a Tangent HO PS4740, originally BNSF and patched for IFRX.  I was trying to go for a more subtle look, not too drastic in terms of graffiti/rust/grime but still interesting enough to want to look over the more subdued streaking & texturing.   The weathering is proto-based but not meant to be a specific replica.  I used the this pic http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=57112 for reference.

Sorry for the drooping brake pipe - I didn't notice it until after I took the photos (it was windy and the model kept trying to roll away...  ;) ).  Anyways it's fixed now.

Thanks for looking, as always please let me know your thoughts & feedback!

Ed

Really great Ed!  It's one of those cars where you have to look twice to see that it really is weathered, which is just the way most cars should be, in my book.  The white graffiti doodles are especially nice: method?

I'd love to see a photo of your HO cars lined up on the track: this, the GWIX hopper, the UTLX tanker, and others if you have them.   :)

Cheers,
Gary

Hi Gary, thanks for you comments & glad you liked it (even tho it's HO  ;)).   One interesting thing about 'subtle' is that when the car is upright you don't notice the weathering on the bottom bays nearly as much, but turn it on its side and it can look almost overdone.   Funny how the eye can see the same thing in different ways.  The graffiti doodles are a white gel pen, getting a fine line takes a pretty light touch and then still if you look close you can see I smeared it a bit.  For black I used the Pigma Micron 005 tip.  Both inks come out kinda bold/glossy so they have to be toned down with a bit of grime.

I'll see about lining up the cars, tho that track is only about 2' long, so you may see a few of those push pins that I stick in at the ends to keep the cars from rolling off....   ;)

Nice work on the car.  I like the graf.

I've been using a white colored pencil for graf lately.  If you sharpen it to a very fine tip, the results can be nice but require some smearing.
