Micro trains "notched peak 33' twin bay hopper" question

Wow I start a lot of threads...!

Anyway, I found a few micro trains 33' OS hoppers (rock island) with tapered peaked ends, which are destined for an alcohol bath, followed by a coat of black paint and some C&O decals. These were a nice find, though this is an easy end style to simply add to existing OS hoppers (the price was right though).

However, on MT's website, they list a "notched peak 33' twin bay hopper" in their undecorated models, and was wondering;
1) will this car have different ends than the ones i have? The ones I have now have a tapered peak, shaped like a trapezoid. I would think that a notched peak implies the ends like C&O used after the tapered style, with a cutout above the ladder on each end. Anyone know for certain?

2) Is this an offset side car? It almost has to be (notched end SCREAMS C&O, hence OS) but i would like to know for sure before i order a few of 'em.

Micro trains needs to add pics to the undec section...

The C&O's that MT produced were arched ends. For MT that would be an 86000 body style. If the Rocks are 86000 body's, then they should be as right as you are going to get.

I'll post a video for you in a few that may make you grumpy...lol.

I'm giving a couple 2-6-6-2's a workout and have a 28 car train behind one on the test loop now. The train includes Athearn, Atlas, MDC and Bowser hoppers, all unique numbers with some other equipment thrown in for a mix.

Lol thanks Skip, cant wait to see the vid.

I am going to hunt up some of the atlas arched-end hoppers as well, the MTs ride a bit high for my taste, but theyre easy to get (the undecs) and everything but the ride height is pretty nice (and theyre bad, but not horrid. Losing the pizza cutters will give some more wiggle room to lower them a bit too). I need to give my new 2-6-6-2s a workout sometime, maybe after i finish the tender decaling (Spectrum REAAALLY screwed up the tender markings). I dont need all my hoppers to be peaked, but a variety (kinda like the real C&O) is nice. Even with the flat end, MT peaked, and Atlas peaked ones, thats a pretty good variety, plus some quads, triples, RS and composite cars in the mix.

Im not sure what you mean with the numbers. The undecs im asking about are on MTs site as 89 00 000, the rock island ones I have no idea what the number would be? I really need a scanner...be easier to just get a pic from my C&O freight car book and say "ok, this is what the rocks look like. Is this one what MT *whatever* looks like?*

There's a nice listing on the UMTRR site:

(89000 is a rib side)

A list of all the body styles produced by MT.....

http://www.micro-trains.com/databases/carstyle.pdf

All the standard issue cars produced by MT.....

http://www.micro-trains.com/databases/ndatabs.pdf

The only Rock's that I could find had been released in 90000 body which is peaked end, offset side, no notch.

OK, thanks much! Yes, the rocks have the peaked end, theyll work for C&O just fine (only got 2 of em, but rome wasnt built in a day) and thanks for the PDF (and NandWs reply!) that shows the 89000s are RS cars, so not much good to me. Maybe theyll do a run of the OS arched ones soon. Ill just get a batch of the OS standard ends, that will hold me for a bit, along with the armada of Trix OS quads. Black paint jobs and decals on OS cars I can handle.

MT has done about 7 or 8 body styles of the 33' twin bay hopper. There is one style that they only ever did ONE run of , and I always wonder why they would tool and only use it once?

A few years ago MT changed the product numbering, so some people still use the old numbers because they had 30 years to learn it. and many many products still on store shelfs have the old numbering system.  ;)

Very cool video Skip, good idea with Unitrack for a test track! who makes/made the RS 3 bays with the arched ends? (the ones right behind the OS arch end twins in the train)

Mine is capable of about the same, 25 or so cars on the level. Good enough for me, not every loco has to pull 50+ to  me worthwhile in my eyes.

I can't see the vid at work, but I'm gonna guess that Athearn (MDC) makes them:

I did some snooping and the 89 was used for a pair (10 years apart) of L&N cars and we used them in our silver MOW set.  I let Chris know about this and he will do some research on what other paint schemes we can apply to it.  With so many body styles, many don't get used enough.  Hopefully I can come up with some interesting schemes.

I was thinking that, a few N&W cars and VGN ones wont be out of place in a C&O themed layout.
