Doug love the thread. The FWWR is my second favorite railroad and their tracks run about 1/2 mile north of my parents house on the old SLSF line. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

Doug, how are you coming along on yours.  Finished this a few weeks ago and forgot I had posted to this thread.  I ended up using the Amtrak blue with a hint of black added to darken it.  Comes close to the pictures I had.  Also went with CSX yellow after I saw photos of an HO version someone did.  Can't compare off the real one, so it goes...

Had to lay out the individual letters for Panther City since the decal sheet didn't have that one.

eNjoy!

The GP50 looks fantastic!   Is that a Kato shell?

My project hasn't made much progress.  I'm still gathering parts here and there and doing some research, but I've stopped any project work--with the exception of soldering feeders on the layout--since I'm likely going to be purchasing a new home in the next few months and I have to focus on that and saving money in the short term.   Still gonna happen, but probably will be mid/late summer before I get back on it.

Yes, Kato shell and mechanism....that was an interesting unit to disassemble.   :scared:

No progress on the models, but I wanted to post an update about the paint.  TCP-149  Fort Worth & Western Blue and TCP-150  Fort Worth & Western Yellow are now showing up on Tru-Color's website.  I have e-mailed them to see if it is actually available yet. (I've been foolishly awaiting a call from a local hobby shop)

I know this is way late, but give me till the end of the weekend when I can sit down and look over your photos and I will answer all your numbered questions. Does not look like anyone attempted, but I will go over all of them in detail for you.

That is if you haven't already finished this project. You know, if SE was still around you would have almost all the detail parts you need.

Brian, thank you.  I have not progressed any more with this project.  I think I have the majority of parts I need, but still would like more input.  I haven't been able to find the BLMA curved grabs for the roof but other than that I've been just waiting on time and paint.   Paint is now available, but I'm working to get track down on my layout at the moment before I jump back into any loco/car projects.   So by all means, any info you can provide that will help me make a better model I would love to have.

OK, so I took my roof shot and broke it out and tried to identify everything I could.   I may have some of the stuff misidentified...like I said not much of a locomotive expert.  So, if you have any clarifications let 'em fly.   I know some of the details are probably not conducive to n-scale but I figured others in other scales might find use as well so I just kinda tried to identify as much as I could.

1 Antenna (Firecracker?)

Yes, it is a Firecracker Antenna. I do not know the exact diameter of this antenna, but my guess is 0.020" to 0.025" in N-Scale. If I need one of these, I will use 0.020"/0.025" diameter plastic rod and drill it for a 0.01" piece of wire for the stem.

2 Antenna (Type?)

This is an EOT antenna (End of Train). You would just have to make a base and put a piece of rod cut to length.

3 Anti-Skid Coating (or Rust?)

Not anti-skid. Just plain ol wear and tear.

4 Plate (Name?)

That is an inertial filter hatch or others call it a dust bin. This hatch sits over the clean air room. This is you rtypical hatch on the phase I GP35's. Phase II use the raised Dust bin as seen on everyting else after the GP35. But the vents can be in different locations.

5 Vent ?

Yes, it is the inertial filter hatch vent. It is where the hatch expells the crap it seperates from the air.

6 Lift Ring
7 Lift Ring
8 Lift Ring

Yes, yes and yes. This is the smallest of three sizes. it measures 2.375" OD x 1.375" ID. Nobody offers this size in N. Contact me in a few weeks. I may then have some.

9 Housing Modification (Dimple/Hole/Bolt in middle?)

This is the PAF box (Paper Air Filter box). This box is added onto the GP35 after deturboing it and removing the turbo exhaust. I have never seen the feature you are pointing to on top of this box. It is so small, I would use 0.006" diameter wire and nip it off at 0.005" above the top of the PAF box.

10 Housing Door (hinge on right?; Is there a door on both sides?)

No, there is only a door on the left side. Right side is featureless. Just a flat wall. That door is where they change out the paper filter.

11 Lift Ring
12 Lift Ring?
13 Lift Ring
14 Lift Ring?

Yes, yes, yes and yes. I tried to make this lift ring in Photo etch. It is just to small to make. This feature is insignificant in N-Scale. It is so small that it would barely be a pimple on the corners of the box. It is sort of a tear drop shape.

21 Dynamic Brake Modification

Yes, after removing the turbo hatch, they lopped off the front blister of the DB hatch to add the PAF box.

22 Anti-Skid Coating (or Rust?)

No anti-skid. Just general wear and tear. Weathering.

23 Exhaust

Yes

24 Spark Arrestor?

Basically yes. It will deflect any glowing carbon bits back down on top of the locomotive instead of them floating up and out into some dry grass or forrest. A true spark arrestor will have screens around it.

25 Exhaust

Yes

26 Spark Arrestor?

Yes, same as above. These you will have to make yourself.

27 Horn (Type?)

I just know that as a Leslie three chime horn. Possibly BLMA. Although the Atlas horn that comes with the model is not all that bad. You will have to put it on a bracket though.

28 Fan (Type?)

This is an early 48" DB fan. It is the same type that was used on the phase III GP9. You can get this from from an Atlas SD24 radiator cooling fan. Looks just like this one. Although a DB fan has 10 blades and a rad fan has 8, but I do not think you can see that in the Atlas fan. The Atlas fan looks very good.

29 Fan (Type?)

This is an original early phase GP30/35 48" cooling fan. It is a 20 arm spiral fan. The best one to duplicate this is from an Atlas SD35. Atlas diod a pretty decent job on the SD35 fans. Just a tad short in height though. But good looking fan.

30 Fan (Type?)

Standard GP35 36" cooling fan. Same type of fan as used for the SD38 DB. Stick with the Atlas supplied fan on model.

31 Fan (Type?)

This is a late type 10 arm concentric grill. Best version of this fan is on a Kato SD40-2. The Atlas GP38-2 also has this type of fan. It is pretty good looking as well.

32 Lift Ring
33 Lift Ring
34 Lift Ring
35 Lift Ring

Yes, yes, yes and yes. This is the middle size lift ring. It measures 2.75" OD x 1.5" ID. Again check back with me later. What I do not see are lift rings on the DB hatch. They would be the largest size at 3.375"OD x 1.75" ID. Look at the unit behind this unit. At the rear on the side of the hood just below the radiator screens, you see a lift ring. It is on both sides. It is also the largest size ring. This ring is also on the unit you have all the numbered question on.

36 Fan Grab Iron.  V or Curved? Trailing unit is curved.   CURVED: 2001,2002,2003,2005,2007,2008,2010, ?  V-SHAPE: ?

It is curved.

50 Cab Panel1
51 Cab Panel2

Yes, but there is only one door and it has three latches. This is a cab sub base door. There is some plumbing and such behind it. SOmetimes people also call these battery box doors, but the battery box is the one in front of this one.

52 Vent ?

Yes

53 Light?

No, this feature is a door holder. There is a door on the top of th ebattery box. When they open it, the knuckle buster (door latch) clips into this feature to hold the door open.

54 Battery Panel?

Yes, battery box door.

55 Ratchet Hand Brake

Yes

56 Step
57 Kick Panel?

Yes and yes

Hope this all helps a bit.

Brian

Not all of the units will have the exact same details maybe, but this is a good start.
