I know, I know, slugs are almost always custom built in RR shops (except GE Mates, which you could probably call custom built as well)

Except for one variety - the CSX MK rebuilds based on GP35 and GP30's.  About all that is needed is for Mark4Design to do a replacement bodyshell, which BTW has almost no details, since the prototypes are basically a long sheet of flat steel.

When I brought this up years ago, the chorus said - if you were a REAL model railroader, you would stop talking and start sanding down an Atlas shell. Well, I've sanded about 3-4 shells into oblivion now and official give up.

So, Robbman, when can we look forward to some slug shells???

Lou,
You need to talk to Mark, he's the one that schedules everything and owns the business. Robbman is the super dooper design dude.  ;D

Mark will respond but is quite a busy chap.

Most of the doors are replaced with solid steel carbody sides and the fan grills are gone.....

Yes, so why sand the doors down? Is it not better to cut the door apertures out and insert sheet styrene? I'm sure everyone has better things to do than sit there sanding doors flat! ;D

No need to sand off the doors, I shave the radiators fan and screens, and door handle and the use putty to cover the door edges and fan holes, the sand them smooth. Also the slug are almost permanently mated to there GP40-2 mothers so you have to do the pair.

Sundowner - nice slugs....

I need to give your method a try - what did you do on the roof, since when you sand down the fans you end up with a hole?

I used putty to cover the hole. It was a harder type that could be made into strips to cover the holes.

Take a look here, if you are asking about IAIS 650's history (formerly IAIS 466):

http://www.iaisrailfans.org/motive-power/650/

The IAIS is also supposedly building a second slug out of IAIS 481. More to follow on that in the future.
