They arrived at the shop today. Beautiful as expected. Looks like I may have to do some QC and test running on them though. The Rio Grande I brought home for myself is missing the wormgear. I went to check something after setting it on the track and thought, this rolls too easy. I picked it up and the front truck free rolls. Pull it apart and the worm gear is missing. I have as spare parts, just about every gear Kato stocks, but I don't have this one. I'm guessing this is just an odd, one off mistake, but check them just to be safe.

Here are the pictures of the truck. I will wait till tomorrow for beauty shots of the loco.

I'm not bashing Kato on this. Stuff happens. I'm sure it will be taken care of. I'm just glad I got the dud and not one of my customers.

The printing and detail is very crisp on these. Better than normal honestly. There are lot's of seprate parts on the shell to make the details adaptable. AC Unit, Antenna, and sand fillers on the nose look to be all seprate parts. The light pipes and lenses are molded in a trasparent orange color to filter the blue out of the LED's and it works very well. The rear light is lacking a bit because the LED is close to an inch away from the actual lense.

the worm gear isn't missing, the only thing missing is the gear/cogwheel between the worm gear and the axle gears...
...but something looks wrong with the whole truck anyway, are there two wheel contact stripes on the (picture) right side ?

...but the shell is looking great, can't wait to "mangling" my UP one  :P :P

Steve, the thing on the left is the worm, and the gear that touches it, on the right, is the wormgear.

Congratulations!!!  You received one of five models built with two contact strips!  You win a visit to the Kato factory with Mr. Kato!

Seriously, strange problem - mine seem perfect, but I better run them to be sure!!

SirTainley is right, worm is different from wormgear.

SO if the light pipes are molded in orange, what will happen when the nuclear Kato LED is replaced with the warm white of a decoder-mounted LED?  Might it not be TOO warm?

The "double" pickup wiper was just where the spring section for the center axle dislodged a bit when I removed the truck. It has since been "adjusted" back into place.

For Steve - an explanation of gearing terms: http://www.nwsl.com/Catalog/cat6-02-v0112.pdf

NWSL explains it better than I can.

Might have to make one of these for fun...

The foobie above was my first real custom painting exercise to try something unique and challenging. I picked up the undec unit dirt cheap.

I still need to figure out the greenish base color. It is hard to pin point just based on photos.

I'm picking up the Heritage units this week and will take a battery of detailed photos.
