This time, upper level, about 72" .. Rock crusher on one end, a grain elevator on the other end .. nothing in the middle .. about 4-5 inches to play with from the track to the backdrop ..

Yeesh, long straight track right along a backdrop. Well, how about the edge of the remains of a long, narrow rock quarry that once supplied the rock crusher? The land could slope irregularly from roughly the height of the crusher down to track level by the elevator, all done with shallow rock casting. Or is that entirely too goofy?

Leave it open. Maybe put in an elevated road across it to break it up, maybe a "town" looking thing on the side with the grain elevator. Don't underestimate the importance of negative space.

I like the tunnel of trees.  Maybe place a hobo jungle (or homeless/druggies) depending on your timeframe.
