I do know there are still undecorated kits available, although that introduces the need to paint and letter the things and N scale freight car decals aren't exactly readily available (And some of the ones that are, frankly, stink).

Hmmm, don't agree with that 100%.  Granted, HO has the lion's share of variety, but there are several sources of accurate decals/transfers for N.

Where?  ;) I'm sure you meant for select few roads.

heh, nice try. I can't tell if those are accurate or not.

N&W has a lot of ...... what kind of car? Hint:

(no worry though I am working on a solution to that one).

The NW scheme is well covered by ShellScale decals: http://www.shellscale.com

ShellScale is reportedly about to announce accurate decals for N&W passenger cars (a first!).

Pre-1971 freight schemes get a little dicey. The 1963-1971 boxcars are covered by decent Wilson McClung decals at the moment.

For some reason I actually know a lot about what's out there for N&W ...

I have some of the really crappy NE Decals N&W sets if anyone wants them.

Ah, just dip 'em in black and write the N&W in white-out! Simple! :D ;) :P

Brooklyn Locomotive Works recently announced that the CR, EL, and WC SD45-2's would be out "soon."  I took a look at the Intermountain website to see if they had any photos.  They have replaced the cartoon pictures with ones of the units.  The Conrail and Erie Lackawanna units appear to have the incorrect fuel tanks.  I hope that these are corrected before they hit the dealers.  The CSX unit in the bright future paint job has the same type of fuel tank on the Intermountain web site, but on N Scale Supply, it has the CR/EL type of fuel tank (which we found out was incorrect).  I am hoping that the people at Intermountain put the correct fuel tanks on before they send them to the dealers.  If anyone has these ordered and gets them, please let us know what type of fuel tanks the EL and CR units have.  Thanks.

I saw the Conrail unit at the Springfield train show and it had the correct big fuel tank.  The Conrail unit looked better than the CSX unit which was interesting.  Some of the detail on the nose of the Conrail unti looked better to me.  Coincidentally, the hand rails were broken on the engines they had at the show.  I saw them pretty early in the show too so as usual, they don't hold up too well.  I am optimistic that the EL engines will be doable though.  I hate to pay the price they want for "doable" units but modeling the EL requires I have several SD45-2's and other than brass, this is the only game in town.
