Quick & fun flat car project

This weekend we actually had some snow in North Carolina (no, this ain't Pennsylvania so it actually makes the news!) so I had lots of modeling time.

I took a new Walthers N scale GSC flat lettered as a Pennsy F41 (front, nice little car, so I can forgive the incorrect deck for the PRR F41) and painted up and weathered the deck to look like wood.  I coated the deck with PolyScale matte finish and sprinkled on some sifted dirt and sand along with a few tiny bits of toothpick to look like old dunnage.

I also made a load of pipes from styrene tubes.

The other flat (rear) is an Athearn flat also representing a PRR F41. The load next to it is a slightly modified Hay Borthers Garage load.



Two obviously different cars representing the same car class and number series? The proto police are probably speeding to my house with a warrant right now...!

But seriously, folks...  What's the composition of the deck?  plastic? white metal? real wood?
Looks really good.  The toothpick splinters really do the trick.

On the lower car (Walthers), the deck is part of the one-piece metal casting that is the car body.  It was originally painted in the same color as the sides.

On the top car (Athearn) the deck is plastic, and is a seperate casting from the car frame.

Looks great!

So am I understanding correctly that you did not paint the decks a different color, but simply did the matte/dirt thing?  I'm trying to get ideas for what to do with the new IM 60ft flats when they arrive.  They have cast metal simulated wood decks.  I also have a few of the Athearns too.

I didn't paint the Athearn deck; I just weathered it with chalks, Dullcoted-it, and then did the matte finish with debris (the matte finish acts as an adhesive).

I did have to paint the Walthers deck; like I said it comes in the same freight car red as the frame.  I used PolyScale Earth with some black wash, and then weathered it the same way I did the Athearn car.
