After decades of drought finally some N&W 50' boxcars in the boxcar red 1960s scheme (well, the N&W scheme above has never* been done on a 50' box in N scale before).

This along with the double doors Atlas is releasing ends all that. Gonna have to spiff up the old tooling on the 50' Double Doors (1st of the Atlas ones I've bought since the 1970s!)

*except for a BLW special run on MT tooling 20 yrs ago or so.

The 50' Single Door XM is actually designed based on an early AAR design. ACF was probably the largest builder of this design. Many railroads and General American also made their own versions of this car as well.

As far as our tooling goes, we reused the ends and roof from the 50' Stock Car and just tooled new sides to fit. I will try to get some photos up of our test shot later today.

Although Atlas improved (thinned) the roof walks considerably on these compared to the 1970s releases I will either have to "thin" them like I did back in the 70s or replace them.

Back then I did it by eye, with a flat file. Looks like crap by today's standards. Will try to post a pic this weekend.

Its very nice to see Atlas releasing both 2 number single cars like they've always done and also an additional 3 number pack for the hoppers.

That means 5 numbers per release for hoppers and this is good

I'm definitely excited about the new hoppers, and will be buying a bunch.

Too bad about using the "old" roof and ends from the stock car.  An "accurate" model of the ACF prototype would be useful for 50s, 60s, and 70s modelers.  This sides look great, so hopefully Atlas will release a "non-Trainman" version at some point.

I forget what year, but in the late 50s they dropped the lines above and below the road number/reptg marks

This scheme was used until late 1963, when the scheme with the  (hamburger or half-moon) was adopted.
