Lee,

I was thinking the same thing, until I noticed the difference in headlight and horn placement and the difference in front steps, and the conspicious lack of bare trees. I really love the feel of that proto photo though.

When I first saw this I thought for sure you had just photo shopped Ed's model into a proto picture... then I noticed the number was different...

Describing my photoshop skills as "limited" would be overstating my ability.  When I saw E'd model I immediately thought of the shot I posted.  He done good for sure!  My photo is poor, but, you can't take one like it anymore.   :(  I picked up a couple of the C424s from a LHS clearance table awhile back for conversion to EL - someday.

Ed,

Do you remember what size I beam you used to fill in the underframe? I got my Alco out and that open area is a big eyesore..

...and the headlight, the handrails, the fuel tanks, snow shields or some sort of awning over the air intake, different font and position for the CR on the nose...

Aye, I'm taking notes. For when I build my C425 hi-nose.

.100" I beam should work. I used both Plastruct and Evergreen. Plastruct gets the nod for being dark gray.

I don't remember exactly what it was. I just eyeballed it.

If DL says .100, I'd say that's the smartest place to start.

I just noticed Steve's photo, taken across the street from the newspaper I work at. Read what the boxcar says  8)

To bad those tracks and that station are now a "USA fuel mart"  :-\

Yep, the boxcar is a CP 80xxx series car built exclusively for newsprint service. A variation of that shield logo was applied to cars dedicated to newprint service and was maintained on the "Action green" multimark scheme when the car was colour-coded green for newsprint service.

Great job, Ed--as usual! I really like your work. As far as the paint "scheme" goes, it's quite plausible. I've seen early CR units with both PC and PRR lettering and logos showing through. If the road number hadn't changed, then the old yellow numbers might still be there.

But a question: how exactly do you use vodka for weathering?  ;D

Nice job!  I always loved those CR paint-outs...  I've debated doing one myself, but for now I'm stuck in 1956!

Thanks guys. It's fun seeing old threads revived!

1st. Weathering using vodka: Basically, I just made paint washes using Vodka instead of rubbing alcohol (usually Smirnoff). I found that the thicker consistency gives me a bit more control over the wash.

Well, as far as the scheme goes, the reason it's a fake is that the road number never wore a scheme like this, but I did it because it is completely plausible.

I need to get a DCC decoder in this bad boy, as it'd feel right at home when I travel to Lee's.

Remarkably, I'm soon to "inherit" one in exchange for some decoder labor...  Is this a great country or what!?!
