Canton Railroad boxcar

Any of you Ballamorons know anything about the boxcar in this photo? Since is has steel ends and Andrews trucks, I'd say it could be as late as the 1940's. Looks like it might be an interesting modification of an Atlas double sheathed or a scratch job.

Found the photo on Northeast Railfans dot net.



I guess I could call the Canton Railroad as the secretary there is the daughter of the PRR's supervising freight agent back when I worked there. At least she was there eight years ago...

I -could- have researched this a bit before I post this, but it's a bit
late. Where exactly was this Canton RR located? Just wondering since
I live not far from Canton Ohio (unfortunately) & haven't came across
anything like the above before.

The Canton was once independent, serving as the terminal railroad between the Beano and PRR.  Today it's owned by the State of Maryland.  Outside of a couple of switchers and a repainted B&O bay window caboose, I wasn't aware they had any freight cars.  But the era you're talking about predates my contact with them.

I doubt you'll find much information about it by calling the railroad now.  Probably a bunch of party functionaries.

Lee, that's not the case, at least as far as the President, John Magness. John was a National Account Manager for CSXT. One of the AN's major customers is headquartered in King of Prussia, PA, and John used to call on them for CSXT, so he and I spoke many times, but that was 20 years ago. I looked on the website and I don't see Lucy listed.

I'm hoping Ed might find that guy's email, or at least recall his name. Too much to hope for, I guess... :(

Yes, it is named for the real Canton, the one in South China. The Canton Company was a company that ran clipper ships between Baltimore and that Canton. It also owned docks and warehouses in Southeast Baltimore. When I worked there it was still privately owned and had the docks and the railroad serving them. When the Maryland Port Authority took over the docks it also took over the railroad.

Yes, it's anything but new.  It was an offshoot of the Captain John O'Donnell's Canton Company almost 200 years ago...


Here's what they were running back in the 80's.  Today they have some MP-15's that have a pretty striking paint job.  Black with a stylized Maryland flag. 

As much griping as I do about my home state, I have to say we have the best looking state flag, bar none.
