Sign of Time Passing By...

I just picked up a new Atlas SD-35 on the 'bay to replace the mechanism in 7436, which is about kaput after almost 7 years of faithful (and heavy) service.  This one was the only one out 7 of these things I own that got the high-pitched gear whine.  The motor is still serviceable, but I was just never able to get the drive train to smooth out for some reason.  So into the parts bin it will go, it's "brain" being transplanted into the new one once it arrives.

The shell is painted by me, and will be transfered to the new drive also.  The incoming unit is a first release WM Circus with an un-numbered cab.  The cab will be numbered for 7435, and transplanted onto that unit, which was damaged in a previous gravity experiment.  So I'll be able to restore two locomotives to full operation and appearance for the modest investment of $45!

When I had to can a couple of Bachmann drives, it was no big deal.  But when you have to retire an Atlas Drive, its a sure sign you're getting older! :'(

Rather than just retire the old mech, strip out the gears and the motor, make a dummy loco and use it to carry a sound decoder and a speaker. I have no idea if this works but it's my plan for a couple of locos.

I thought about that, but I have to part out the new shell to salvage 7435, so I won't have a "whole" engine at the end of the day.

I may take what's left of the shell and paint it in C&O colors for a scrapper to work on...  How much are those welder's torch circuits, anyway? ;D

If it was just the drive you needed, I have two L&N SD35s waiting for me to find them a new home. Never broken in or even ventured out of the box.

Thanks for the offer, but I needed the WM shell to replace the cab on 7435.  So I'm fixing two locomotives for less than the price of one.

Well, if you know of anyone looking for some L&N units, or just SD35s to strip, mine are up for grabs.
