Hello Folks,
I`ve just about finished my new Diesel I`m Etching and thought you might
like a look!, I`ve put three Links to show the Stages so far.

As well as showing off, ;-} I`m really practicing uploading "Pic`s" for this Months
Weathering Contest so as not to make such a Damn fool of myself as the
month before last.
I would like your Thoughts and Criticism about the Diesel please.

Hello John,
The Prototype is an "Ab Class" of the  W.A.G.R., yet originally it comes from
the U.S.A., It was apparently an "EMD D25, or EMD D32T, or EMD D14" and
that was to be my next question, If anyone could throw some light on her
for me.
I was told by some Bloke they were Ex U.S.A. Vintage around 1965 or so?

John,
What type , Make and Model are those you`ve shown?, They really are an
Exact copy of our "A Class" WAGR Diesel`s which came out before the "Ab"
class.

Looks to me to be a GM-EMD G12 export locomotive. I have a 34 page booklet describing GM export locomotives. I do not know the date printed but the address is shown as 1775 Broadway, New York 19, N.Y. so it is pre-Zip Code. HP was 1425 and Clyde Engineering was licensed to build them in Australia.

No photos in booklet, just line drawings and lots and lots of specifications. It is spiral bound and has no copyright notice, so if someone is interested in copying same and sharing, please PM me.

I'll go with it being a G12. It's on page EMD-134 of the "2nd Diesel Spotter's
Guide." It says a total of 92 were built for use in North America between 1955
& 1964. (90 to Mexico-2 to Canada) It doesn't say how many were built for
export to other countries. V-12 567 prime mover-rated at 1310hp.

So is the WA unit that is the original subject of the thread. It raises the question of the gauge of the models. Z scale mechanisms would be good if they were more plentiful (varied)and reasonable in price.

A lot of the Clyde-built locomotives deviated externally from the orginal EMD "export" designs - cabs, hood ends, frame length, truck design etc and had a distinctive Australian flavour. The Western Australian units had a "high-rise" cab - presumably no need of a low profile (are there any tunnels in WA?)

NZ had around 146 G12As sourced from EMD in the US, GMD in Canada and Clyde in Australia. The Clyde units have a longer frame (apparent from the walkway across the long hood end) and a totally different truck design.

We did have one Tunnel in "Upper Swan" until the introduction of Diesel Engines
It was a gentle uphill grade and was cussed by Drivers Firemen and Passengers
alike, believe it or not, it was hinted that our Forefathers had the Tunnel built
so we could be like other States and boast at least one Tunnel in our system.

And yes this was in the 3` 6" gauge years when the "A class Diesel" came on
the scene, The Tunnel is now a reluctant Tourist Attraction and can be viewed
on Bush Walks on the old "Right of Way".
In passing John, that Diesel you show has a Herald which is much the same as
our Queensland Railway Herald.

It is a Queensland Railways loco. Note the number 1461 - IIRC the second member of the 1460 class. Not sure what's up with the colours though - maybe some special commemorative version?
