Whoa, nice!
-
I have to admit, I was hoping they might do the ATSF reefers in N, when I saw the HO announcement a while back. Pricey, but look like they will be worth it. Luckily, with a 1956 timeframe, I can only justify a couple, so the damage to the wallet will be limited.
What is Rapido's turn around time between pre-order close and delivery on a freight car, nowadays? Which is to say, in what year is the bill likely to come due?
-
Just wish they did a few more with conspicuity stripes.... a check of rrpicarchives shows plenty of them...
-
The ATSF reeefers will be expensive, but a string of those would be sharp.

No board gaps to complain about on these. Disappointing.
Joking of course. :D

Waiting patiently, well kinda patient but not really, for the N scale sodium chlorate car in N scale

same here....

Ain't mad about those Procor hoppers.
Not one bit.

Looks like I'll be in for one of the Rr-56 El Capitan original scheme cars. The target logo scheme and the other two classes are too late/early for my eras, but a single Rr-56 in the delivered scheme is a definite.
-
Anybody have any idea about how long these reefers were in active service? Past 1970?
I'm a little surprised in my relative ignorance that Santa Fe was into mech reefers in 1955. I witnessed firsthand icer operation through 1973. They had numerous facilities in the California produce belt devoted to icing operations in the '60s.

FGE was similar. First 50' mechanicals in 1956 but ice service well into the 1970s.

Digging deep into the vacuous caverns of my mind, I might have answered my own question about longevity. From '72-'74 a buddy and I railfanned in an area with a lot of citrus packing houses, all served by ATSF. The din of mech reefers was considerable. I don't recall seeing any with the classic slogan lettering and especially ladders and roofwalks, so if some of these were in fact older cars, they had been modernized and repainted.
Bottom line is the bottom line. I can save my shekels this round, I think, but if Rapido reissues these cars as they probably appeared ~1970, my wallet is toast. :scared:

The first ATSF mechanical reefers were the even earlier RR-54 , which, IIRC, were coincidentally, built in 1954. My understanding is that the primary use for mechanical reefers in their early years on the SF was for frozen juice and frozen food. Reefer blocks would have 2 or 3 mechanical reefers together on the front end, so they could easily be separated at the destination yard for quick delivery. Prior to the mid 50s, Santa Fe used some cars with extra insulation for this service. Iced reefers still made up the bulk of the reefer traffic for several years after the RR-56 appeared.
-
Here's a film made by Santa Fe in the mid 50s about produce/perishable trains and cars. The then "new" innovations in refrigerator car design begins about 23 minutes in (but the whole thing is quite useful if you model produce trains).

You mean something like this?

I can't find any photos online of the classes of cars Rapido is releasing in paint schemes other than what it is offering. So I am wondering what your memory remembers.

They said in the announcement video that pre-orders are due 12/6, so they made it seem like they're ready to start cranking 'em out once they know how many to make.
-
Yeah, this one with quick turn around. Pre prod cars already in house, meanwhile the HO chlorate car doesn't have a pre prod yet.
-
Oooooo I’m gonna need a couple of those Procor hoppers; they’re not as wide spread as the centerflows from what I’ve seen, but they’re still out there, or at least were recently enough.

Here is a handy collection of articles for those interested in ATSF reefer ops after I had to do some more research: https://www.jumpjet.info/Offbeat-Internet/More/3rail/Reefer_Operations.pdf (https://www.jumpjet.info/Offbeat-Internet/More/3rail/Reefer_Operations.pdf)
Anyone have a collective SFRD roster that would show how these would be in proportion to the rest of the fleet?

I believe Rapido has its own factory, which probably makes for a quicker production process.

Especially for stuff like this that isn't reliant on electronics from third parties.

Here is a roster of freight cars in use as of 1950, although the number of cars in each class appear to be the original number constructed, not necessarily "live" cars. But I think it safe to think that most reefers RR-19 or newer were still in operation. A quick add of those cars totals 11700. Probably a few less in 1955 when the first RR-56 made an appearance, but then, there would also have been a couple more rebuild classes by then.
https://old.atsfrr.org/resources/HollwedelGeorge/1950%20Freight%20Cars.pdf
By contrast, there were 200 RR-56, 25 RR-60, ?? RR-61

I would love to see the CBQ/BN equipment in N scale, but I would be shocked if they ever did I it. I might buy the reefers if it is a slow month when they arrive.
-
I'll be in if they do the SFRP reporting marks.
Jason

Give me 90208 and 90221 in N scale. I'll also gladly take a Phase II painted F40PH #239 too.
Just bring the F40PHs and Cabbage to N scale!

As Tom says, mechanical reefers, being much more expensive than the older iced ones, were primarily used for frozen foods in the early years. Eventually they became common enough that icing was discontinued in the early 70s.
The BN used older reefers for potatoes for several years after that, as all they needed was insulation. They also used the reefers for grain, due to a shortage of 40 ft boxcars and covered hoppers. Remove the bunkers, and load the grain through the roof hatches. They didn't need grain doors, as the reefer doors were already well sealed, making unloading easier than a standard boxcar, just open the door.
The disadvantage was that most were only 40-ton cars, so they gave the elevators a two-cars-for-the-price-of-one deal. The elevators didn't like them, but when the alternative was no cars, they took them.
The BN also lined old stock cars with plywood and used them for grain, after a good cleaning. They took standard grain doors.

Well this is a first for me. I've been able to avoid every Rapido release so far but.........
ATSF Reefers oh dear, hide Mr Wallet hide!!!! :D :D
-
Too bad they aren't doing 210 in the F40PHM-2 release. Of course, if you know, you know, but if you don't, don't go look it up. Its disturbing the "relationship" a certain person has with that locomotive.

Hahahaha. I'm hoping it's a special run (like the Amtrak Day One unit).

I think in the live announcement they made it clear they won't do it. I'm sure people will renumber them though!

I am beginning to feel like a relic. All this wonderful new tooling coming out (not just Rapido) and nothing remotely appropriate for my transition era, pre-'52 Santa Fe layout...

Maybe we can talk Rapido into doing their HO UP ACR boxcar in N scale....
But I know what you mean. The reefer only makes it into my 1956 timeframe by 6 months. And this is the first opportunity I've had to buy anything from Rapido since the meat reefers or the CN baggage car (which ever came most recently). IMRC puts stuff I want up on pre-order for 5-10 years, then cancels. Luckily, I bought a lot of IMRC AAR boxcars and ATSF reefers and stock cars, back in the day when they were $10, and actually available.
-
CB&Q bilevels in N are almost a certainty.......
Because if produced, in spite of causing me to source power cars and modernized heavyweights, will force a total rethink of a layout (train watching "Racetrack" aka East End vs. generic ops railroad).

I would love to see the PRR X31 et all in N scale. A signature car that operated from the early 1930’s to the late 1960’s, and they traveled all over North America (the RPC article on them showed several photos in CA). Thanks.

The F30 flatcar and variants would be nice to see in N as well.

This here is what I'd want. Heck, just do those four numbers to match the photos Rapido.

If you are up for a bit of a challenge...
The X-31, X-31A, and X-32 are available in resin kit form from Fine N Scale. These kits include etched details, and are not particularly difficult to assemble. You do need to paint and decal them, and provide trucks. They make into fine models- and have some dents cast in- so they look like they've done some work over the years.

Rapido has now updated their delivery schedule for the 5820 pellet hopper to 'Available Now!', so hold on to your wallets... especially if you're me.

I received my Procor 5820's last week, in pretty much every scheme except the later Procor black logo and Essex Hybrid cars (too new for me). Overall, very nice cars. I ran them on my loop to see how well they run, and they do run very well, no detail getting in the way of the trucks or hanging below the railhead (zero trip pins snagging on frogs). Probably the best free rolling Rapido cars I have. With a 29 car train there were no issues reversing with the weight of the train on them as they were shoved through (Kato) switches; they stay planted on the rails.
The one issue I did have was some random uncoupling in a few places on a few cars. However, I have had this same issue with new MT couplers as well as with MT clones on other Mfg's cars, so I can't say this is necessarily a fault with the couplers Rapido used.
The Procor 5820 has occupied one of the spots on my list of 'cars I really need', and I'm very pleased to see it crossed off that list with this very nice car. That list has gotten shorter in the past few years, thanks in part to Rapido... just need someone to do those 1970's and 1980's LPG tankcars.

I agree these cars run real well!
My only gripe is one of my six ordered arrived with no trucks :x
Where is the QC
Having a devil of a time getting Rapido to respond to my 3 emails in the last 2 weeks. Next the phone.
This adds to the hassle I had with the Dash 8 .

Oh wow! That's a new one. Though one of my NAR GMD-1's came missing an idler axle, and they never responded to emails regarding that.
Still waiting for the new cct boards for the LRC cars, too

Defective boards in the LRC heat up to the point the plastic will warp, very hot to the touch, wonderful smell. Some are worse than others. Rapido acknowledged the issue and was going to replace the boards. Last time I asked was at Trainfest 2022... they were 'working on it'.
