It was a good week for modelling.... the Prairie Shadows special run CN F unit was finished detailing and weathering....

I added numerous grabs and ladder rungs, three chime horn, sinclair, roof mounted bell, MU's, roof mounted cooling coils, winterization hatch and rear ladder to the unit per proto photo's found on line. I also cut the side skirt back as CN did when it was rebuilt. The unit was weathered for freight service.
Another Geoff Gooderham slab side hopper was built, painted and decalled - it too was weathered according to photo's

Those enterprising Pollacks! I think that NYC uses a similar contraption. That engine should provide enough trust to make it into a self-propelled snow melter. 8) But I bet the gas kerosene mileage is really poor (especially if they fire up the afterburner! :D
As far as model railroading goes, I'm working on the Arnold SW1 review for the NTRAK newsletter.

Well done, Mike. Superb work, as usual. I particularly like the salute to that wonderful Canadian group, "The Irish Rovers"!!
Cheers

Peteski: The story I read, and I won't swear to the accuracy of the source. is that the NYC did try this in a yard. Buffalo, maybe? It not only blew the ballast from between the ties, but also blew the points and tiebars out of the switches. They eventually gave up...
Whether they used the same engines on their jet-powered RDC I don't know, but it wouldn't be surprising.

Thanks Greg, nice catch!; a couple of the Rovers are personal friends of mine from my days living in Richmond BC. Got to know Joe quite well. His son Ian, who's in the band in his place now and I shared a condo for two years. Just saw their farewell tour in Peterborough last week and got a chance to spend some time with them.... and, in the words of a true Rover... "wasn't that a party..."

The jet-powered snow melter is by no means consigned to the dust-heap of ideas. During the NS Steam Program Buffalo-Corning excursion this August, we detrained at the end of the day and walked right by this unit parked at the intermodal transfer yard.
Sure looks like an aircraft jet engine to me.
Not sure if this is independent contractor-owned or not, but you know me, I love critters, so I photographed it from all four sides.
You could, of course, change this to N scale and use it as a vacuum.....

Quote of the week... well played kind sir!

Somewhere out there in YouTube world there is a video do the Canadian Pacific jet powered snow melter being used to melt snow off the front of a snowplow. If I remember correctly, this operation takes about 40 minutes to complete. I can't help but think the amount of fuel used to run that thing at full throttle for 40 minutes amounts to e very expensive snowplow cleanup.

This weekend I decided it was time to tackle a project that had been sitting on the workbench for too long: fixing the wrecked frame of my B23-7.
Last year (I think), I discovered a crack in the walkway casting. Well, when I went to go fix it, the whole area disintegrated.
I was annoyed, because replacing it meant having to match the factory paint, but D&H Avon Blue came through again.
I still have a good bit to do: adding some decals, adding the cab signal box back, and a bit of light weathering, but I'm enthused with the results so far.

We have one in Conway similar to that one. It is used primary on turnouts to clear the points of snow and ice. It does use a small jet engine, but it's only used to melt the snow. The machine is self propelled by a small diesel engine and when in operation, you do need to stand clear as it will throw loose ballast with enough force to hurt somebody. Also not a private contractor, the unit is operated by somebody in the MOW department.

Beautiful track modelling Lennart!
After three months of shows, events and open houses time to get back to my own layout and regular ops sessions!
This Thursday we held the final op session of the year...we are up to 46 full sessions now and closing in on the magical number 50! I learn something each session.

Well here we are a few weeks later.
Stripped, dipped, plastic adhesion promoter, paint white, masked, white again, then colour.
The plastic adhesion promoter worked well. I had zero issues removing the masking tape. I even got Scott L's model in there as well this time as an added bonus. Thanks for the tips everyone.

Those locos have come out looking very snazzy, well done. Not sure if it has been mentioned however to make sure you obtain a nice crisp edge to your stripes after you lay down your first colour and add your masking tape the tape should be burnished down then the shell given another very light spray of the original colour along the edges of the masking tape. Then the next colour is applied. This stops any paint bleeding under the tape onto the first colour and gives a very crisp edge.
Good job Graig.
Rod.

Thanks very much!
That's exactly what I did. I shot the white again after masking.

After working on motorcycles for the last year...
You also build N scale motorcycles?!? Do they actually run? 8) :ashat: ;)
Nice to see you back Jason! The model looks great!
-
Nice work to all!
Spent my train time today building handrails, pipes and front coupler bar for this old girl. Also finished in the ashpan fire flicker optics from the firebox LED. Have been modifying this Life Like Y6 to become a NP Z-4, 4500 class. Many more details to go yet, but it has been running well now for a year. Added loksound to it as well as many mods to improve performance. She will pull 20 cars up a twisty 2% grade I have now! It's about time to redo the Bullfrog Snot on the #3 drivers tho!
-
Very rewarding day! For the first time in a lonnng time I had a day on the layout. Spent a good part of the day tuning up a couple of troublesome turnouts in an effort to improve reliability and function. Mine are all hand built code 55, with the mini slide switch power routing/point movement. In one case I determined that power was not being supplied to the point rails and that a new/second power lead was required. No problem, I'll fix that after my visit with mom. Two hours later I drilled a hole for the new wire, fired up the soldering iron a fixed the problem, confirmed by running a loco through the turnout several times. About a hour later I'm contemplating my success when I realize I've fixed the wrong turnout (the one right next to the problem one). But the previously troublesome turnout is now working just fine! How does that work?
Also, why does my brand new Atlas GP9 fail to pull 8 cars up my less than 2% grade when any of the older ones has no problem?

OKC Train Show pretty decent yesterday. Lots of reps and of course those crazy boxes

Not the weekend, and hardly an update, but this morning at a jobsite, I came across this cool hand-made toy train that belongs to the homeowner.
Then engine featured operating metal valve gear that looks like its assembled from various bits and pieces of hardware, and the ornamentation is provided by some very ordinary stuff, for instance, the smoke box door is a chrome pipe collar

And she was ready to haul some toys. Here's the gondola...
Note that the coupler is an old shutter lock that can be pulled up with the chain. It locks into an eye hook a the end of the next car.

And the Little Red Caboose brings up the markers.
It looks like the wheels are from a hardware store, too, maybe old hardened rubber skate wheels. I'm guessing 7-24 was J.J.'s birthday...
I thought it was a cool thing to find just as Christmas Garden season is getting into full swing.

Spent some time with a RRXing stencil and static grass. The handicapped parking stencil did not work and I had to salvage some blue toned pavement. I may just give that idea up for this location, but I wanted to be ADA compliant in my modem mill.
[attachimg=1]
The static grass went better. Only took two applications to put a grass space between the parking spots and the building wall.

You can send me the Wide Cab MLW unit.
Haha. No way! That's one of my favorites. The one I'm really looking forward to painting is an M630W that I kitbashed by using a cab from a Briggs models M420, and one of his conversion kits for an M630. That one will be in the batch of units that I have waiting for the earlier "Hockey Stick" paint scheme.
