Who's going to Milwaukee for Trainfest this coming Saturday and Sunday?
Sharon and I will be there Saturday after our traditional stop Friday night at GastHaus for Weiner schnitzel ala Holstein (fried egg and anchovies on top). Yum!
-
N scale Modutrak will be there - we will have a pretty good sized layout. Set up will be a bit different than in years past; the HO guys will be there as well and we will be in an "L" shape with the HO layout in the middle of the L. Stop by and see the layout :)

They let you out? Work release?

I was planning to go and even bought tickets for me and my son, but I am in China on a business trip and won't be back until 11/25. Hopefully BLI will remember to bring the M1's this year. They forgot to bring them last year.

I would like to go,but I have somewhat limited walking ability and the Lansing show is on Sunday.

You joke, but trying to replicate winter cornfields is something I've thought a good bit about, and it's actually quite the challenge.

Ed,you could start with the fall set.I've thought about that as well.

and the Lansing show is on Sunday.
Between the opening of deer season and Trainfest weekend, you'd think those in Lansing might pick a different weekend for theirs. But, I suppose its whenever MSU can fit them in. Ah well, come smell the excitement!
Hoping to be at Trainfest. See you at Leon's!

I'd like to see correct early 60' hi cube boxcars such as the greenville. 8)

me too Ed. even with a light snow.

I will be there on Sunday as soon as I can drive up from O'Hare. Managed to get a client meeting on Monday in MILW, paying for the trip. Getting a bit tired of our local train shows, but the one time I went to TF, it was stout, and I did get to buy lots of little detail things I rarely see at shops or smaller train shows. I have my shopping list ready......
-

Yep, exactly.
Because, what you need, are the tiny, lined up rows of 1' tall cut stalks, and that's really tough.

Since I can't be there, looking forward to new photos and videos of the layout for more inspiration.

Hmm. Fields of corn stubble are usually indicative of modern practices, "modern" meaning roughly after mid-1970 (tho' some experimentation from 1950-on). It used to be turned-under right after harvest for the organic matter to decompose in the soil. With the advent of large-scale agricultural chemistry and eventually seed drills specialized for the practice, it became more beneficial to favor soil conservation with no-till techniques.
Anyway... corn stubble foreground with Conrail, yes; steam, not so much.
-
Interesting, I did not know that.

Rapido will be at Trainfest; our new Product Development man; Dan Darnell (ex of George's Trains) and Matt will be there with a bunch of stuff, including our new GMD-1's, the upcoming baggage express pre production samples; the pre production Osgoode Bradley car (I think, we don't remember if we packed it.... ) and some of our new, and soon to be in stores N scale reefers..... Dispatcher says there will be some Private varnish operating over the Modutrak sub, with visitors from Lowell Smith lines and southern Alberta Rail among others. Photographic evidence to follow.

I can say that both practices, tilling versus non-tilling, are still done from my observation chugging down the rails.

Yes, absolutely. No-till corn costs big money in chemicals and special equipment, and not everybody is convinced the return is worth it, especially in the current down market. Then 8-10 years down the road, depending on soil type it is sometimes necessary to install drainage systems - thousands of feet of that black corrugated tubing.

So .... nuttin new? :? (besides finally learning about the Kato SDp40F)

(pre production photo)
You're right Puddy - the paint is nicely done but the engraving on the sides/roof is still way too deep and too wide. This photo actually show that quite prominently. The engraved gaps between the boards seem as wide as the boards themselves. If you were to look at a MT 40' wood reefer, they are a good reference of what is a good compromise: the gaps between the boards are slightly oversize and too wide, but they don't look as exaggerated as the ones in the Rapido's pre-production photos. The engraving on these reefers reminds me a bit of the 40-year-old old-timer Bachmann boxcars.

Saw these at Athearn, thinking those bilevel racks will be expensive to populate with vehicles!

They look pretty nice, but appear to be prone to derailments ;) or maybe the unitrack is not properly gauged! The handrails are getting beat up, but the other details are holding up to being "gently" handled by the public

What's with the raised portion of the front "porch" on the UP SD40-2?
-
What's with the raised portion of the front "porch" on the UP SD40-2?
Looks like they used the same multi piece set-up like Kato did with the SD40-2 Mid. Easier to get the light tubes in for the ditch lights.
Brian
-
What's with the raised portion of the front "porch" on the UP SD40-2?
Looks like the sill is more than one piece and is simply misaligned in the photo. More importantly, are we looking at operating ditch lights and pre-installed uncoupling levers, grab irons and wipers?? :o
-
Got permission to hold the INTM SD40s. They are about as heavy as you might expect any Atlas loco to be of that size. They are not quite as heavy as a Kato, yet they seemed heavier than the the SD45-2s. I was rather impressed. Yeah, the handrails have taken quite a beating as you might expect. I watched in another booth, in horror, as a 12 year old just walked up and grabbed another locomotive.
The blue was quite dark on the ICE unit, also rather nice I thought. They make Atlas' GP40s look too light. The BN seemed quite nice as well. I think we might have a contender here. Now, I am wondering how they will run..
Oh and those Athearn racks; nice! The flatcar seems quite heavy. The "handrails" on top are not quite as fragile as you might think either. Plus metal wheels. I'm all over these. The fella there claimed the next HO batch will very likely show up in N too! Mmmm, racky goodness.
I'll get my pics up, gimme a few...
-
Agree on the ICE units. Thought the blue was too dark. Really nice looking models though.
-

Some would find it appropriate if they were a prototype modeler...

Sorry for the crappiness of my pictures:
Trainworx display: GO PAT!
Oh, and his dump truck actually dumps. There is even a way to get the hydraulic rod to match the bed in it's raised position. (Sorry, no pic)

Mmmm. Log truck:

Pretty tractors. Pretty livestock trailer (Wait, is there such a thing?):

Among the Atlas foobs, was this jewel: (I said foobs):

Too bad about the Bachmann SD45 shells, well at least they have added details, as well as sound and DCC. But for the price?!?:
But their passenger cars look "interesting":

Mmmm, Corn.
I asked Intermountain to release one road number per year, instead of four at once. I doubt they will follow my suggestion, damn it.
-
If those Atlas containers are coming in 3-packs instead of 2-packs then the price is much more reasonable. On the other hand, it's a bit inconvenient if you want to fully populate a 5-unit double stack.
-
The raised porch on the UP SD40-2 is prototypical on some of their engines. I'm impressed that they modeled it.

You beat me to it. I immediately thought hot dog/bun issues.

I've wanted a logging truck model for a while- that Trainworx unit looks great.
Were any of the Atlas containers out of packages? I'm interested in how they are dealing with the door hardware.

Triple-stacking!

That CSX SD40-2 looks pretty good except for one thing. Its still got the wrong trucks... :(
-
That CSX SD40-2 looks pretty good except for one thing. Its still got the wrong trucks... :(
And it's not as if people didn't tell them about this - often.... And get a response!
For me the wonky handrails are a show stopper, although I reserve judgement until seen close-up.

Or the wrong number series.

Man, all those trucks :D. Now we need some cars to go with them.

I was going to applaud IM for painting the window gaskets, but the. I realized the real UP 2966 had the gaskets painted to match the body. I do like the pilot mounted ditch lights and the grab irons.
I may get a couple to convert over to SD40Ns. Maybe we could talk someone on RW into making us a set of etched metal handrails for these... I have my doubts the factory ones would survive a complete teardown.

I think that unit has been manhandled and is not completely set in place. If you notice, the handrails going to the sides of cab are out of kilter. Back side is out of hole, front side is skewed up. Also notice, look at large gap just above the red stripe and bottom of yellow cab. And here is photo from FB page when painted samples arrived showing same unit, no raised porch is apparent

And on the CSX unit below, you can see where there is a distinct line is same area of the "raised porch", just above the top step/yellow safety stripe.

No Conrail units on hand.
And yes. The units were really mishandled by the public.

GP 40 modeled later in life after the dynamics burned up and the fans were removed, but the grills left in place (or plated over) Most of the photo's I have of the 156 show it teamed up with 2 GP 40's. I had just gotten the SD45 speed matched to run with the rest of the fleet & decided to break it in at Trainfest, so added the 144 instead of Gp40's 2013 & 2048.

@milw156 - did you use HO Scale all weather windows on the 2 units equipped with them? They look a little over sized.

JNJ, these were done a good 8-10 yrs ago, and I believe that was about all that was available at that time. Some one mentioned that Gold Medal Models also makes some, but have not seen them. If that's the case, then the 156 will be getting one of those when I get around to adding the grabs, and weed cutter plow from Trainworx.

Not the best photos but you get the idea. Funny how much the orange looks different under different lighting conditions.

Nice U boats! Matt showed me an engine that he had used the GMM ones on, and they were much finer, and even had openings for the leading and following edges in addition to the sides. Might mean it's time to send the thru the shops again to get updated! Thanx for sharing, Always nice to see Milwaukee units!

Bryan is right, there are several my LHS has several different manufacturers of Milwaukee Road orange, I have seen Trucolor Scalecoat, and Modelflex recently, On the microscale website, under resources is this chart
http://www.microscale.com/Merchant2/Floquil%20Color%20Chart.pdf
which says Testors Orange if pre 1973, and Tamiya orange if after '73
Bill Denton used Scalecoat on the FM 10-44 at the top of page 6 of this topic

I did buy a small bottle of MILW orange at Trainfest, thinking it was a match for the old IHB orange (makes sense since it was half MILW owned) Hope it works.
Also, wanted to add my late kudos to all things Trainfest. I arranged a business trip to Milwaukee around getting there a day early for TF, and wasn't disappointed. Great show, lots of energy. Even our largest show in DFW seems to be a bit short on the energy factor the last few years, but maybe that's because I see the same vendors, stock, even in the same locations in the building.
Love being able to talk to the manufacturers and some of the bigger national dealers. Only complaint was the speaker for the state of the hobby clinic didn't show, and they seemed as mystified as the potential attendees, so these things can happen.
Hope I am still working up north next year, as I would love to attend.

A few photos of some of my heavyweight equipment running on the modutrak layout. The Milw S3 is a Jim Stillman casting (still haven't figured out how to get the tender shell to sit lower); the Pacific is a repainted Model Power unit. I painted all these heavyweights; the photos are taken on my Wisconsin Dells modules. The bridge is kit bashed from two Walthers kits and Micro Engineering parts.
