I have been inspired to start a micro-layout project in HOn30. Over the past couple years, I have become increasingly interested in modeling narrow gauge; the down-home, unique nature of the equipment has a lot of charm, and narrow gauge modelers seem to emphasize attention to detail and a high level of modeling.
I've been a dyed-in-the-wool N scaler my entire life, so doing a project in another scale is new territory for me. I conisdered Nn3, but the scarcity of equipment and high price points of entry for motive power was off-putting. HOn3 was the same story; beautiful stuff from Blackstone, but it comes with a high price tag, and only offers options for Colorado narrow gauge equipment. I really enjoy the selection of On30 stuff, plus the options for getting into superdetailing, but I have no room for an appreciable layout.
HOn30 was appealing, since I already have the skills and equipment to handlay 9mm track. Minitrains' latest release of the F&C 0-4-0 in HOn30 tempted me even more, and this brass/white metal kit that Toma Model Works recently released sealed the deal for me:
(http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab19/timgill1983/0521-2.jpg) (http://s845.photobucket.com/user/timgill1983/media/0521-2.jpg.html)
This body kit improves the look of the Minitrains loco from toylike to approaching a convincing, albeit freelance, prototype Baldwin loco. A larger, more realistic tender is also available on Shapeways.
I have benchwork built for a 2x4 layout sitting in the garage, so I figured that this would be a fun opportunity to try my hand at a freelance HOn30 layout. I'd like to really shoot for a high level of detail, as well use it as a workshop for some lighting and sound projects that I haven't tried before. Here's the track plan; simple and straightforward racetrack.
(http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab19/timgill1983/HOn302x4.png) (http://s845.photobucket.com/user/timgill1983/media/HOn302x4.png.html)
I am recycling a freelance concept that I used for a previous N scale layout; the Marmion Valley Ry. Is a Central California short line, circa 1928, moving passengers, produce, and lumber between a small agricultural region and an interchange between the Southern Pacific.
Scenically, I am still sketching out ideas. I know that I would like to emulate the rolling hills and lush, scrubby vegetation of Central California; so a central land formation to serve as a scene divider seems natural. Near the spur, I would like to have a small/rural depot, water tank, and perhaps a couple other buildings of clapboard/board and batten construction. On the other side of the layout, the track should give the impression of following the path cut though the valley by the riverbed.
(http://i845.photobucket.com/albums/ab19/timgill1983/Sceneryver1.png) (http://s845.photobucket.com/user/timgill1983/media/Sceneryver1.png.html)
I'd appreciate any input on the design, and any ideas about how to lay out the scenes more effectively; not really sold on the development of each area yet. I am still tossing this idea around as I await delivery of the body kit from Japan and the loco and rolling stock from Europe.

Ah, but you are looking like at least $220 for that loco and the kit. I've been eyeballing it myself, but I need another project like a hole in my head :|
You can test it on your N scale layout to get going. I scratchbuilt a small HOn30 0-4-0 a while back:
/>
Has for the layout I would just keep it very simple so you have the most chance of getting it done. ;)

Yeah, I'm planning on picking up the set with the passenger cars; I ordered the kit already from Toma. It will end up being around $300 for the loco, kit, and 4 coaches, but to me that's still cheaper than around $500 for an HOn3 Blackstone based on a prototype I'm not modeling, or trying to hunt down an appropriate mechanism and kit for an Nn3 build.
I really like that Porter. What mechanism did you base that on?
Has for the layout I would just keep it very simple so you have the most chance of getting it done. ;)
Bingo! If I do get this project off the ground, I have to split my time between it and my shelf layout.
-

Pretty much everything but the wheels, motor, headlight, and stack were scratchbuilt. I etched a bunch of it myself at home and turned some parts on a lathe.
Keep us updated.
BTW still working on your small N layout?

Yeah, finally getting some free time to get the momentum going again. Posted an update in the thread here: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=30464.45 (https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=30464.45)

My body kit arrived from Toma. I spent the last couple evenings working on it. This is my first brass/white metal kit, and, as I found out, it's in no way a beginner level venture...

This $^*&@#(% little thing has given me so much grief...
...but that's OK, because it's cute.
Some of my favorite moments were:
1. Irreversibly breaking off the drill bit in not one, but two pilot holes
2. Sending the cab roof flying across the room with my Dremel
3. My voyage of discovery learning that etched grab irons bend if you look at them funny. Or breathe on them. Or if you are in the same room as they are.
4. Playing a fun little game called "Let's drop this on the floor several times and completely flush $80 down the drain."
*Le sigh*...but, alas, all turned out well. Still have to (re) attach the cab roof, install the pop valves/whistle (going to paint them separately), and install the bolt covers for the pilot braces. The smokebox front and headlight will come from the donor locomotive.
I am hoping to pick up the actual loco/mechanism and coaches this week or next. Have them on hold at a hobby shop about an hour from me.
-
Man I was re-eyeballing that kit last night. Looks good!

Yeah, I was looking at that. I'm not sure yet if I want to alter the frame of the locomotive as much as I would need to to install the new pilot and lead truck.
Also had my eye on this:

Almost looks big enough to hold a micro-tsunami and speaker...hmmmm....

Taking another stab at scenery. I've added a small switchback spur, which will be a small enginehouse/service scene.
(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2909/14265906993_3d0b56d4b3.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nJCv8F)Marmion Valley - Scenery V2 (https://flic.kr/p/nJCv8F) by timgill1983 (https://www.flickr.com/people/116532616@N06/), on Flickr
Not sure exactly what the industry along the spur will be. I suppose it could be a general service freight house, a cannery, or somesuch thing.
The buildings along the street are also up in the air at this point. I want to avoid the "generic model railroad block of storefronts" look, but I'm not really sure which direction to take it.
The depot will be along the lines of this:

The trains have arrived!
(Blanket apology for grainy cell phone pics shall apply herein)

Stem to stern, the locomotive and 4-car consist is 21", perfect size ratio for the layout.
As cartoony and toylike the stock loco shell is, it's really finely tooled and has "heft" to it. The loco runs like the proverbial Swiss watch, with a whisper-quiet motor. Seeing the outside-frame counterweights flash as it creeps by is an added bonus.

I also really like the fact that there is a footplate between the cab and tender, a detail that most model steamers seem to flagrantly omit.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3890/14163417188_f3261aeda1.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nzzdu5)IMAG1676 (https://flic.kr/p/nzzdu5) by timgill1983 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr
Now, I am at a bit of an impasse, as the new shell I have built requires me to cannibalize the headlight, bell, and smokebox front from this little gem. Smokebox is no problem, just clips right off; I assume the bell is press-fitted, but it might be glued. However, from what I can tell from a cursory inspection, I'd have to hacksaw the headlight off of the molded-on bracket; For whatever reason, I don't want to chop up the original shell.
Sooo, it's off to eBay for some brass detail parts. I'm thinking of getting both a box-style oil lamp and a more modern electric headlight, maybe fit a steam generator onto the boiler in that case. While I'm at it, I'll probably grab another bell as well.
-
Also, I might add my little gripes; wish they would have put actual openings for the clerestory windows in the coaches.
Oh, and those funky couplers.
-
I don't see the point of the siding in the plan. If you're just trying to have somewhere to run something visually interesting, save the space and money for more scenery and equipment.
-
Do you know how tight a curve it will go around? If it will make it around my little layout that would help me buy one :scared:

Here's someone else's video of it running around Tomix 103 mm (4.5") curves:

You make a good point. The siding(s) don't really have much operational interest, other than to maybe drop or pick up a car every now and then. The shorter switchback is intended to be a small engine service area, where a second small loco could stay parked. But again, how often will these spurs be used in an operational capacity? Little to nil.
Really, I think of the spurs as a scenic feature. They create leading lines visually and different opportunities for "sub-scenes;" the long spur to the freight house/whatever industry, the small enginehouse/service spur scene, etc. While I won't operate them, they can be used as photo ops for posing rolling stock/etc.
All that said, it is tempting just to make this a racetrack with no spurs, since the primary function here is a display layout. Since I'm handlaying, omitting turnouts does have the attraction of less time commitment; the $$ factor is negligible since rail and ties are cheap.

I can't even find them for sale yet so I'm safe (for now)

I had the same issue and ended up contacting Minitrains directly. They were very helpful, and referred me to a local(ish) dealer who had them in stock and shipped them to me fairly cheaply.
There, now you have no excuse. Muahahahaha :D
-

Caboose Hobbies carries a bit of the Minitrains stuff. You might call them and get an idea of availability.

Do the cars come apart if I want to re-paint them or are they all glued.

They do come apart. This guy on Shapeways has made different 3D printed interiors for these cars:
https://www.shapeways.com/model/1884295/hon30-interior-for-f-c-coach.html?modelId=1884295&materialId=6
Also, air brake cylinders:
https://www.shapeways.com/model/1702249/4-airbrakes-for-hon30-f-c-coaches.html?modelId=1702249&materialId=61
I'm planning on painting these; the green is a bit too bright for my tastes.
-
Caboose Hobbies didn't have the unlettered ones... So I ordered one with letters :D
If it wasn't for the great chassis under there I might not, but at least I'll be happy with it's running out of the box.

It's a great little runner. I'm assuming it's the same mechanism that fits under their German-prototype 0-4-0's, but with outside-frame.
I'm toying with converting it to DCC, but I'm not so experienced at that yet. If you put this tender behind it:
https://www.shapeways.com/model/1696823/small-8-wheel-tender-for-hon30-f-c-loco-ver-a.html?modelId=1696823&materialId=62
...there might even be the option of shoehorning in SOUND. Again, I say: muahahahaha
-
Well I have that scratchbuilt 0-4-0 that I put a number "1" on and the Toma kit has a "2" so I think I'll keep both locos with the short 4-wheel tenders. I plan to give it vacuum brakes and possibly rebuild the "cowcatcher". Other than that who knows, I don't even have a use for HOn30 lol. :P

You'll create one
I really dig the little loco...a small HOn30 layout would be fun
-
HOn30/OO9 is starting to look more and more attractive as Minitrains brings out more and more good stuff. Plus, Peco's OO9 track range is excellent.
I just don't have the ability to justify modeling in two scales. Nonetheless, I'll be watching with great interest.

That makes sense, and is kinda what I thought.
I feel like, if they're just going to be scenery, then it makes the most sense to lay them out a bit more organically.
Do you have some photos or references for what the actual scenes that you're trying to replicate look like?

Here are a few snaps I've grabbed from the web.
These are the "vibe" I'm going for with the Depot side:

That last one is a little more "big town terminus" than I am going for.
Here are a couple trestles that serve as inspiration for the other side of the layout.

My main inspiration for this layout is the 3' Pacific Coast Railroad, combined with some Maine 2-footer influence.
I really do appreciate feedback and criticism/suggestions on the design; it's helping me refine the vision of the layout before I start.
Picked up a bundle of Code 55 rail and the supplies to start scratchbuilding the depot today. Waiting on ties to arrive!
-
The more I think about the plan, and the more that I evaluate the available space I have, I'm temped to make this a full blown HCD sized plan at about 2.5' x 6'.
This would allow me to maximize the "scene" potential on either side; I could install folding-table legs below and removable plexiglass on the sides to allow attachment of a cover for storage.
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5581/14364848191_0a7ff1ac22_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nTnAUp)IMAG1682 (https://flic.kr/p/nTnAUp) by timgill1983 (https://www.flickr.com/people//), on Flickr
Anyhow, just a thought. A revision of the Depot side would then involve just a passing siding and a small house track or team track.

That's such a cool micro project. Puts me on the fence again. Part of me wants to expand this to a HCD sized layout, the other part wants to see how small I can make this project and still keep the design principles I want to have.
-
It looks even bigger in the video:
/>The low backdrop separates the scenes.
-
While I await delivery of ties to start laying rail, and detail parts for my 0-4-0, decided I would start working on the depot.
Here's the inspiration: the Scale Model Masterpieces shortline depot. This has the perfect "look" for my little layout, and the train-order signal screams shortline railroad. However, I didn't want to spend $60 on the kit; and I wanted to change the stone construction to board and batten. Scratchbuild!
Using a scale ruler and some cardstock, I made a paper mockup to get the dimensions I wanted. I went through a few iterations to get the ratio just right.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3870/14205501729_8986f9b2d2.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nDhUKB)
Then, I started cutting and assembling the walls.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3868/14412276883_db16cbb7a3.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nXyFNt)
(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2899/14392294435_fca1c54c8a.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nVNgHv)
The final wall assembly, with primary rafter supports installed.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3893/14205727770_58ef5a8f10.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nDj4WS)
The walls, trim, and doors/windows were spray-bombed with cheap grey Krylon primer.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3851/14205854387_2a95c64262.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nDjHzV)
I realized after spray-bombing that I still need to cut pockets in the long walls for the 2x6 rafters that will support the eaves. I ordered a train-order signal kit and some shake-shingles today.
Now, to decide on a color scheme. I've always been partial to AT&SF style off-yellow and green, but I'm thinking of going in another direction with this one, maybe grey and maroon.
-
In other news- I have decided to stay 2x4 with this layout, and make it a true racetrack with no spurs. The idea is to keep it as simple as possible and treat it as a practice run, since this is a first foray into HOn30. In addition, it can be used as a break-in loop for my N scale equipment as well.
-
My Toma kit showed up, but I'm not even sure my Minitrains set is even on the way yet...
So outside frame 0-4-0's a pretty rare so I've been trying to find photos, found this page:
http://www.thorsteamworld.com/photos/pv.asp?pid=1365
-
Detail parts came in for the 0-4-0. I have an Oil Headlight and an Arc-type.
GIANT oil headlight:
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5280/14415438602_e8d248ca63_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nXQTES)
Arc Headlight:
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3849/14230113138_85860d0909_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nFt3Sf)
For obvious reasons, I am leaning towards the arc headlight; though, in that instance, I'd need to install a generator somewhere on the boiler.
-
Could be an oil burning lamp:
http://www.grandtline.com/products/images/quarter_inch/100's/124.jpg
-
Do you know the number of that headlight? I just bought: Precision Scale HO #31289 Headlight.
Thanks
-
Yep. That's the same one I got as well. I think it's a good fit for this loco.
-
Ties arrived!
(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2911/14242318750_2e5b35efa2_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nGxBaQ)
The new "copperhead" ties are stamped, so they are perfectly flat. They also match the thickness of the wood ties, and have been sanded on the top side to have a simulated wood grain.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3863/14242317598_b2782d983d_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nGxAPY)
So now a trip to the big box store is in order for materials for the layout frame. I'm considering framing with 1x3, since there will be very little "stuff" under the layout. No switch machines/etc. The roadbed will be jigsawed from 1/8" masonite, then sandwiched between layers of 2" pink foam.
-
In between projects today, found time to sketch out the centerlines on masonite and jigsawed it out:
(https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2929/14245988498_f8f68efcd4_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nGSq4m)
If I feel the whim, I can start laying track "on the bench," then install this on the final framework when it is done.
-
After checking my porch the last couple days I checked and my card wasn't charged yet. I e-mailed and they said it was special order and has been reserved. I have no idea when I get to play :|

Chris, call The Original Whistle Stop in Pasadena. As far as I know they have them in stock; at least they did when I was there two weeks ago. There was one in the display case.
Also, for those interested; I have started a blog for the Marmion Valley: www.marmionvalley.blogspot.com . A lot of the posts will be mirrors of this thread, but I will also be working at making some extra content as well.

More progress on #2. Test fitted to the chassis; I can't get the silly little magnets that are supposed to hold it together to stick to the boiler assembly.

She still needs her smokebox, whistle, and the leaf-springs that fit above the drivers.
-
Sweet progress :D
I just now opened the baggie with the magnets and man I could barely get them apart :scared:
I would just ACC them in or maybe some Goo and ACC. Or liquid nails :P
I don't want to get too far ahead on the body without the chassis in hand. I did turn the exhaust muffler for the vacuum brakes on my lathe.
-
 DUH. I ACC'ed them in today. Don't know why I didn't think of that.
I've never painted a brass/white metal model before; I'm assuming I should prime it first? Any tips on how to clean everything up beforehand?
-
Details all finished, ready for the paint shop. She is not without her rough edges, but I'm fairly proud that I finished this kit.

I used a grit blaster on my brass, but if you just wash everything you should be fine. I've read soaking in vinegar helps too, but never did it.

You did a really great job on that little locomotive, it looks awesome!

It won't affect the ACC or the Epoxy, will it? I didn't solder anything...

Really neat; I need to look into HOn3 more, I do really like the charm of logging railroads; looking forward to seeing more!

Started applying shingles to the roof, installed doors, windows, and trim. I really like the Grandt Line shingles.

No pics to show at the moment, but got the 2" foam laminated to the frame today and got the PCB ties ACC'ed to the masonite roadbed.
I'm getting ready to take my 0-4-0 to the paint booth; if it's getting a coat of flat black, do you think it's worth doing a primer coat first? I will definitely give it a scrub down and thorough drying before painting.
More to come.

Starting initial contouring around the bridges. I have trouble visualizing my ideas of the topography in 3D, so this is really just experimental hacking:

There will be a central ridge in the middle, of course, perhaps 4" or 6" high.
I had a disaster when trying to lay the first coat of paint on the locomotive. I was using a Testors flat black enamel, and despite carefully thinning it, it came sputtering out of the airbrush and created a strange cobweb-like film all over the model. It took about 45 minutes of cleanup with a toothbrush and thinner to try and save the loco. Not sure what I did wrong, but I think I'm going to order a batch of Scalecoat paint and work from there.
I'm not familiar with the shades of the Scalecoat I color selections, but I think I'll go for their "Loco Black" and the "smokebox gray" for the the, well, smokebox. Anyone have any other suggestions for good color choices?
-
Couldn't you just use a spray can of flat black? and then brush paint the grey.
I used model master gunmetal buffable metalizer for the boiler. And plan to use olive green for the cab/tender.
-
Chris, do you have a pic of how the gunmetal turned out on your boiler? I'd be interested to see how this "buffing Metalizer" paint works.
I think I might just go spray can after all. KISS method.

This is all the further I got so far:

So does anyone know a way for me to strip the paint residue off the model without destroying all of the CA'ed bonds I used to glue the thing together?
-
You could try the old 91% alcohol bath and tooth brush. I have ruined models with too much weathering and stripped them to start over.

So, I spent the better part of an hour soaking the parts for the 0-4-0 in 91% rubbing alcohol and scrubbing away with a toothbrush. Luckily, this cleaned up all of the "disaster paint," and also had the benefit of stripping the factory paint from the frame/cowcatcher/cylinder parts. This gave me a nice "blank slate" to work from for attempt #2 at the paint job.
This time I primed everything with a big rattle can of Rustoleum 2-in-1; surprisingly enough, this primer is smoother than the model master primer I used before, and also adheres better to the brass and white metal parts. Much cleaner (and tougher) base coat.
Rather than screw up things with the airbrush again, I got some Tamiya rattle cans to work with for this coat. The base color is Tamiya Semi-Gloss Black, which gives a nice muted sheen that will hopefully accept decals well.

As you can see, I also went ahead and painted the tender as well.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3894/14807686648_2181bcb852.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/oyvgmd)
I'm pretty happy with how this is turning out so far. The smokebox will be painted with Tamiya Gunmetal. It has a nice metal-flake additive that looks a lot like graphite in the tests that I did. I'm hoping to mask and paint the smokebox tonight; still deciding whether I should mask and spray, or decant some of the paint into a container and brush paint it on.
-
Getting closer! Painted the smokebox and brass trim today, and added some decals.

I received a Funaro and Carmelengo "Short Rio Grande Caboose" kit in the mail. This is my first resin craftsman kit, and I expect it to really push my modeling skills.
Trimmed all the parts from the flashing/molding, and they are ready for a scrubbing:

I recently built a Funaro and Carmelengo HOn30 boxcar. Mount Blue make some nice laser kits as well.

As you can see above, we will soon need a bridge. Here's a reference shot of the type of low trestle I will be using on both short bridge areas:
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3909/14382866033_f5703c9005.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/nUXWYR)
I decided to start assembling the bridge deck using full-length crossties. I drew up a quick template on cardstock after measuring the bridge span.
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3920/15210688962_9622ccc4c0.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/pb7KTY)
Double sided tape holds the ties in place as I arrange them. They were stained with Minwax "Special Walnut," since I had some of that left over from a full-size 1:1 scale woodworking project. You can see the two PC ties hidden in the middle which will serve to keep the rails in gauge and also connect the deck to the rails themselves.
The stringers are clamped in place:
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3910/15024506887_3726802c87.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/oTEwsc)
Waiting for both stringers to set, then I will remove it from the template and attach the runners along the outside edges.

Actually, it's code 55; I had a bunch left over from another N scale project.
I've done a lot of handlaid turnouts on templates before, but this is my first time handlaying ALL the track. It's proving to be...educational...to say the least.

A busy few days around the workshop. I have finally finished contouring the landscape, and applied the first initial coat of Sculptamold to the layout.

This is definitely an area where I have a bit of a learning curve. Visualizing and then executing the land contours in 3D proved to be a bit of a frustrating and painstaking excercise. However, I was more pleased when I started to blend the landforms together with Sculptamold.

The landforms will get a heavy sanding with 50 grit sandpaper, and then a "patch coat" of Sculptamold to clean up any big gaps or bubbles in the texture.
I am discovering more and more that working in HOn30 is giving me an opportunity to really stretch my modeling skills and explore projects that push my comfort zone. This Funaro & Carmelengo resin caboose kit is no different; this is my first resin kit, and, much as the Toma kit did, it is proving to be a bit of a learning curve. I have seen resin kits like this described as a "scratchbuild in a box," and I certainly can relate. I am about halfway through this kit, and am plugging along steadily.

I am having trouble getting the nylon string on the underbody to the right tension. It just looks "slack" to me, and doesn't have the right-angles that it needs for the correct look.

Being somewhat of a perfectionist, this bothers me a bit, but it really is something I can live with and learn from for next time. Must get some newer, sharper bits for my pin vise next time.
However, I am quite proud of how #2 is coming along. She was dullcote-d for "tooth" and given an initial coat of weathering with artist's pastels:

I have to decide how to seal this coat of weathering (Dullcote spray-bombing seems to obliterate it), and then I'll do more specific "spot weathering" with rust/grease etc., as well as some drybrushing to pick out some highlights.
All in all, I think that I am enjoying the "roll-your-own" nature of working in HOn30 so far. It really is addicting, in its own way. Once you get a model to a certain level of completion, there is a lot of satisfaction gained.
-
About the tie rod angles. In real life they would go through the truck bolster and out to the end beam next to the couplers. To model that you need to drill the floor holes right at the bolster. But in real life the trucks wouldn't swing as much as the model has to. So you probably have to push the holes back a bit to get wheel clearance.
Nice job on the loco, I need to get crackin' on mine...
-
But in real life the trucks wouldn't swing as much as the model has to. So you probably have to push the holes back a bit to get wheel clearance.
Right. Since I'm running this on *tight* curves, I wanted the trucks to be able to pivot as much as possible...so, compromise.

Nice looking stuff, Tim.
