A new export locomotive (EMD GT46AC) being delivered in Gabon (Africa) takes a fall. It's almost certainly totaled.
-
Now, that is a bad day. :o
-
Frame bent = totaled. Hope they got delivery insurance!
-
That should buff right out.
-
Those little rubber bands didn't look sufficient. :tommann:
-
I'm surprised it didn't bust through the dock.

+1
Might need some duct tape

Just happy no one was hurt, that could have been a bad one, and not just for the engine.

Fixed that for you, the model designation should also be GT46AC not GT46C-ACe as the GT46AC is the EMD export model built in Muncie whilst the GT46C-ACe is the Australian domestic built model. I've seen posters elsewhere try and say they were built in Australia which is laughable at best....

Well that makes more sense. I was going by the YouTube title but when I did some Googling it didn't quite match up. But I gave the video the benefit of the doubt.

The video being wrong made the comments section quite funny, so many people believing they were built in Aus or delivered to Australia...shows how little people research some things!

Sale ! Sale ! Sale !
Have I got a deal for you!!!

what I want to know .. why do we make such fugly locos for export?

To accommodate tighter clearances. It really screws-up the proportions on hood-type units. You might notice that most non-US-produced models are carbody style for more flexibility in arranging mechanicals in a smaller footprint.

Maybe EMD should build the Australian GT46C-ACe for export? They did sign a deal with EDI Rail to produce our locomotives overseas in a 'low cost manufacturing facility' somewhere like India or South Africa so who knows, they might have gotten our designs in the process.

I know the locomotive in that video is not Australian, but - quite randomly - this started me on a google mission looking at GT46C-ACe's and I have to admit I'm intrigued... Especially by the contrast of old EMD cabs and modern hood units. The Ghan is a rather attractive train too. Would anybody care to suggest some great Australian railroading and model railroading websites? I'm searching, but just not finding anything that's not a dead end.
