I thought the SD40-2s from MT were wide? This maybe is a little wide, but looks pretty good.

Yeah Joe says the cab is the same as their GP35. On the GP35 and GP9 I see the wide hood from just about every angle, but the SD40-2 looks right some how?
Check out these eastern treats:

The longer lenght of the SD40 makes it look better. Even though the GP40 is only 3 feet longer, it still make it look narrower.(http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/picture.php?albumid=60&pictureid=10753)

Part of the overall look is that the trucks don't appear to be tucked in as far under the sills... but yes, the proportions are all wonky:

Look at the inertial filter and the turbo exhaust. Then nose-on shots show the wide nose, the wierd things that then happen with grab iron width and number board sizes, etc.
The BC rail unit has a horn that's going to get awfully hot hanging over the exhaust like that... :P

Realistically (no pun intended) the hood looks fat to me.

Looks like he tried to emulate the post-1980 exhaust silencer but didn't pay attention to the orientation... BCOLs SD40-2s do have their horns mounted just to the rear of the hatch.

It does, but it is not grossly so.

Bear in mind that the Kato N SD40-2 hood is also fat. :)
(only less so)
