Whatcha been doin' this past week, y'all? I have spent a good bit of time loading my photos into Picasa. While I only have a few dozen model photos loaded, I've gotten the vast majority of my prototype photos on there. Reworked a few photos as well, including rescanning a couple:
(http://lh5.google.com/image/Gregg.Mahlkov/RmCUi73tfgI/AAAAAAAAArs/4ZUwibypaCg/s800/C%3A%5CDocuments%20and%20Settings%5CGregg%20Mahlkov%5CMy%20Documents%5CMy%20Pictures%5CNKP709.jpg)
(http://lh6.google.com/image/Gregg.Mahlkov/RmCUjL3tfhI/AAAAAAAAAr0/gxJZN_dm-ec/s800/C%3A%5CDocuments%20and%20Settings%5CGregg%20Mahlkov%5CMy%20Documents%5CMy%20Pictures%5CNKP755.jpg)
The previous versions were too dark and streaky. At the rate I have been posting photos on Thursdays, I still have nine weeks before I need to start scanning more...

I went to the PA RR Museum's Pennsy days with my dad yesterday.
Saw something excellent on the way up there:
A Pair of blue units working in York

http://picasaweb.google.com/ed.kapuscinski/PrettyMuchTheOppositeOfALandmineABluePairInYork (http://picasaweb.google.com/ed.kapuscinski/PrettyMuchTheOppositeOfALandmineABluePairInYork)
Then I headed off to Strasburg where I had some time to kill before my dad showed up. I chased the 11:00am train out and back, catching him at pretty much every place you can. 50mph Speed Limits, 10mph trains and a big plume of smoke to know where he is all make this like shooting fish in a barrel.

My father showed up and we poked around the Strasburg shops for a while:

We then headed across the street to the museum, but I'll post that separately since I don't have all those photos up yet.

I finished my Z scale Berkshire:

This shows the locomotive I started with:

Not perfect, but it is Z scale.

Ed,
My wife and I were at the Strasburg RR In PA about 4 weeks ago, we rode the train and hit the hobby shops in the area :).
However I did pick up a few Boxcars to add to my collection ;D.
I have no photos to post and am not able to work on the layout as it is in storage waiting for me to find a new home for it, the wife and my self but that is taking more time than we thought :'(.
-
Did anyone notice that those steam domes on the ground at Strasburg kinda look like Darth Vaders helmet!
-
FANtastic job, Chris, for Z scale, but you've got to admit there is a whole 'nother level of detail on your N scale version - like working Baker valve gear... But, all in all, a scratchbuilt Z scale steamer is one helluvan accomplishment! 8) 8) 8)

No, but they did remind me of a scene in Coupling (the BBC one) about how "one has to be better than the other".

Nothing for me. Contemplating tearing down a couple of sections ..

Hello to all!
This is my first posting on Railwire with pics and a big nod to the Kapuscinski_Man for all his suggestions, encouragement and help!!
These are from the last year or so....

A PeachCreek shops kit. It took me a while to complete and I made some mistakes, but all in all it makes down the track.

For my two cents worth this week I offer, some road and rail competion on my N scale photo diorama between CSX and my new Athearn Mack Model R and Roadway tamdem pups.
and my newest building kitbash temporairily setting in the middle of the road (the lighting is really good there) for photo purposes. The building will be a furniture store and is bashed from two DPM Hilltowne Hotel kits minus two floors. As you can see it is not quite finished yet.

I finally got some *acceptable* results for my bluff. It's still ended up too yellow and I can't get rid of the glare.

Now maybe I can get back to the track and ballast without getting plaster into everything.

I did finally finish this MRL #259 SD40-2XR for Gordon...
first some facts:
- more than 54 #80 holes drilled by hand
- over 44 BLMA and GMM detail parts glued in and on
- over 65 decals on the shell and sill

They're just the NWSL wheels, 40"/72 tread.
Part# 2679-6
I've heard some complaints about wobble and such, but these seem fine. I did have to adjust the position of the axle gear for proper fit and operation.
(this reminds me to get a couple more sets before they close the doors)

That's REAL nice Steve.

Yikes! Oh, no! I hadn't heard about this! What's the deal? If it's true, I've got to drop a big wad of cash on them for a lifetime supply of wheelsets...

2 years goes by quickly. Here's what the beginnings of my N scale Kato Unitrack
ballasting project looked like in July of 2005.

Here's a picture after the ballasting was completed:

How time flies. Can't believe it was 2 years ago.

John Sing,
You've got to have the best looking 4x4 layout ever. I'm not much on Santa Fe generally, but your little rig leaves no doubt what it represents.
John Berger,
Maybe you should keep the layout and tear down the house...
Bill Deuster,
Welcome back to the 'wire. The weathering work looks like its coming along...
Here's the latest from the Western Maryland on the Eastern Shore...
I've been working on scenicking in the temporary loop section of my layout. You will recall that this stop-gap section was constructed to allow for limited operations for the next couple years while I renovate a bedroom downstairs for my son. Until then, he shares the train room.
Here are two of the vignettes I'm working on now...
This station is located in the middle of the wye that connects the bulk of the layout to the staging yard. It reminds me of the WM stations at Confluence and Meyersdale. It's an ancient AHM structure that I re-worked and painted.
This is located at the apex of the peninsula. I'm gradually filling in all the holes and figuring out what to build that will:
A) look plausible
B) create operations opportunities
C) possibly be recyclable when the full layout is constructed.
The above shot was taken in early 1954... Here's the same location in 1971:
You can see the rest of my layout at my website and photo gallery, accessed via the link in my signature.

Well, first I had to take care of our dark kitchen for the wife ;)
Once that was done there was more of this of course: http://therailwire.net/smf/index.php/topic,12762.msg103424.html#msg103424
And I've also been trying to scan some old pics I took as a kid and get 'em into Picasa.

According to my calculation there should be 55 holes. It looks like you missed one.
Just kidding, it looks great, perfect paint job with crisp separation lines. You should become a consultant for Kato.

I did some detailing work with my newest tool I just got. If you have to get rid of molded on grab iron, you should check it out.
It is called Micro-Chisel from Mission Model.
http://www.missionmodels.com/product.php?productid=16464&cat=313&page=1
It comes with a 2mm chisel but I bought the optional 1mm set. The MIO-10 set comes with a half round chisel that fits perfectly into the grab iron grooves of the P42, F and E units to remove those molded grab irons.
http://www.missionmodels.com/product.php?productid=16465&cat=313&page=1
It took me about 5 minutes to remove 8 grab irons without damaging the plastic next to it.
The flat chisels work great to remove the grab irons even in tight spots or the cut levers wedged between other molded on parts.

I like what I see there Roland. Those are just the tools for some tight spots I'll need to work in for the SD9 project. Thanks for the tip.

I was at the Northeast Prototype Modeler's Meet this weekend and at a clinic there someone recommended that exact tool. Too bad they are so HO-centric. Lots of very interesting looking work there, pics to get posted sometime this week.
