I have been wondering for a long time about this, and even though there have been no announcements yet, I am thinking the next Athearn N Scale steam locomotive is probably going to be the FEF series. My thinking is based on their previous releases. First the Big Boy came out in HO, then after some time, they released it in N. The same goes for the Challenger. Given the fact that the only N versions right now are brass, and the widely known popularity of 844, a high quality plastic FEF could be a popular item.

I would rather see a Allegheny, it make the big boy look small. Grin

Wouldn't surprise me if they did. Athearn has a penchant for doing Big Western Steam that's too big to run on most layouts...

Funny you mention that... a brass Allegheny just popped-up on eBay. One bid so far, a K-buck. I'm reaching for my wallet right now (NOT!).  Roll Eyes

I suggested that to Athearn at the last National Train Show in Hartford...

I was told "it was not on their radar" and "go talk to Walthers".

I would prefer a nineteenth century eight wheeler or ten wheeler.

Walthers has no desire either. The only mass market HO offering is from Rivarossi and it is not exactly inexpensive and slightly dated. Besides, as long as a plastic version is not available, this one keeps getting more and more valuable.....

I think the FEF northerns are a good bet from Athearn. Keep in mind they have also have the SP MT-4's on the way in HO. Probably not as high probability on those as Bachmann already has two Mountains available.

If they don't do the FEF they should have their head examined .

It will be an FEF and will probably be announced in June if not sooner.
